Feds rethink vaccination strategy as slowing demand reveals stark divide
Source: Politico
As the contrast within states like Colorado, Oregon and Michigan spotlights the emerging divide, the administration is pivoting away from mass vaccination sites to refrigerated vans, community health clinics and even door-to-door campaigns in predominantly rural communities with the most holdouts.
The ground game really matters now, a senior administration official said. We dont have to do these major FEMA sites.
The White House long expected vaccination rates to drop off in rural communities and among younger people who are either hesitant about the shots or unwilling to make arrangements to get a shot.

It certainly would be different if more of their cult got the virus and died.
It is pathetic that their followers would rather risk dying than to get the vaccination. AND risk our children and grand children's sickness and death, basically forever more..................
I have completely obliterated every last Republican/Trump Voter from my friends and acquaintances. Screw them all..........

(14,642 posts)I know people who refuse to get vaccinated. Not one thing I can say will sway them. I feel so powerless. Even in my own family, one daughter outright refuses. The other one is fully vaccinated, but she had such a hard time afterwards with side-effects after both Pfizer shots that she is now terrified of getting boosters.
I told her that we probably wouldn't need boosters if people like her idiotic sister would just fucking get vaccinated. She might try to plant a bug in her sister's ear. We'll see. I also told her that no matter how awful she feels afterwards, that is nothing compared to what Covid could do to her. In the end, she'll do the right thing. Her sister? Probably not.
My friends who refuse will not be invited even to outdoor gatherings at all. No vac, no invitation. I will not budge from that. Neither will I agree to see my unvaccinated daughter ... not like she's pounding down the door wanting to see us. (She has gone to the dark side, thanks at least partly to 20 years of military brain washing.)

(22,121 posts)could say or do, to encourage them to go get the shot(s). I think your approach is a good start, refuse to get together in gatherings, etc., nor see people that are not vaccinated.
Already I see where outbreaks of COVID 19 are occurring in areas where vaccination rates are low. I suspect that this will occur regularly and in some areas, will hammer those folks that mocked others for getting vaccinated. And what gets me is why the mocking? Why the disturbing monologue of why they don't want the vaccinations? Along with the outrageous toll of COVID 19 deaths in this Country, another dismal failure can be laid at trump's stinking feet.

My friends smoke, although they think I dont know. My daughter vapes literally every waking minute. But vaccine? OMG, there could be something on it that could be harmful down the road. SMDH

(11,582 posts)I actually wish that vaccines would be mandatory. Fines for those who have unvaccinated children or themselves. As for forging vaccination cards there should be a way for airlines, police, health workers, schools, etc. to do an ID check through a government app or phone number to rule out fake cards. Maybe a bar scan?

(22,121 posts)(they are holding a mass vaccination event downtown STLMO with the City of STLMO, 150,000 shots to be administered) and another similar governmental city entity (Health Dept) that would notify me when a spot opened up so I could be notified and then go and get the shot(s). Not once was I notified by either entity that a slot had opened up/shots were available.
I finally went separately to the Walgreen's vaccination site (for COVID 19), and finally finally got in, got my first shot, and am on my way to the 2nd shot on May 20, 2021.
I do understand that this is a rather unusual process that was quickly implemented and some bugs were bound to occur, although I think that governmental entities could have considered other annual processes that go on today that veterans, the elderly, etc. undergo every year to vaccinate themselves for the annual flu season. Hopefully, if the COVID 19 shots become an annual thing, that they smoothly integrate these shot(s) into the flu season process (if possible)...

(111,256 posts)which is what is getting in my way. If people can call a vaccination center directly for an appointment, more will do so. A central registry is simply not needed and only fouls things up by assigning inconvenient locations and times.
I could understand a central registry when supply was limited and vaccinations restricted by age and occupation. That is no longer the case.

Fortunately, i'm 80% sure I had the disease a year ago, when iron fisted bureaucrats issued parameters for testing, one of which I didn't fit, but ticked all the boxes when they nailed the symptoms down more clearly, after I'd recovered.

(2,442 posts)Why risk staff for people who dont believe in science. There are probably some exemptions, but that is where I would stop.
since many of them will be convinced they've been lied to by the GOP when they come down with a case that's bad enough to need hospital care. There are quite a few videos out there posted by people who learned the hard way.
A few will remain in denial and I can speak from experience in saying some of us would love to strangle them but we don't because we are professionals and cleaning the gene pool is not our job.

(111,256 posts)but it's inappropriate in health care. Trust me, having the disease is enough of a hit.
Better to vaccinate yourself and encourage others to do so. At that point, the maskholes will be the only ones getting sick.

(10,749 posts)Really.
There's no herd immunity, though since I'm not a scientist I'm not exactly sure what that means. But that's okay. If I have to get a Covid vaccination every year, as I get my flu shot every year, that's fine.
If businesses and institutions impose vaccination requirements and it goes to the courts, so be it. If people quit because of too many unvaccinated co-workers and it goes to the courts, so be it. If the stark divide means more redhats die, so be it. If smart people continue to wear masks to protect themselves and others, great. It's not that big a burden. I don't care if it affects sporting events. I understand that a large percentage of military personnel are refusing the vaccine. I hope the military develops a plan to toss them out. Regarding the impact on our military preparedness, you got it. I don't care. The Pentagon will figure out a way. Or not. And we may have to deal with harsh realities in the years to come. Don't care.
In the meantime, Dems have the WH, House, and most of the Senate. They need to do everything possible to lock in Joe Biden's new New Deal and to ensure that the DOJ brings as many of these extremists, from the former guy on down, to trial.

(9,988 posts)He interviewed people who refuse to get the Covid vaccine. They were not anti-vaxxers but rather people who did not believe it was necessary for them to get vaccinated. Their reasoning was that they had researched Covid (probably at online conspiracy sites and Oan) and concluded that its dangers had been overblown by liberal elites and that they were personally in no danger from getting Covid, therefore, they did not need the vaccine. They were younger (30s to 40s), had taken no safety precautions, and had lived just as they always had with no isolation and had not contracted Covid and thus it isnt a threat to anyone. Their only concern was for themselves with no concern for anyone else, evidently including parents, grandparents, and elderly relatives to who, they might give the virus. The selfishness of that attitude is astonishing but so typical of those who have chosen politics over science.

(23,099 posts)That is a ridiculously low number and hasn't increased in a week. Nearby St. Johns county which is 10x more wealthy has rates of 43%. There are no walk-up vaccination centers here, all require appts. And there are some very poor parts to this spread out county and no sites near most of them. WTF! DeSantis is killing us (working class/poor) on purpose and it will take a lot from the Biden administration to improve this.

I think that will end most arguments right there. Employers - especially large companies - have every right to demand it too. They can't allow the virus to be brought in and spread on their premises, infecting employees or their customers. There are liability issues if nothing else.
You want a paycheck? Get vaccinated.

(23,099 posts)All EE there were vaccinated in Jan. unless they had a dr. note saying they had a specific health condition that contraindicated this. Since I'm retired, it took until the end of Feb. to be able to get an appt. on 3/5 - there was little vaccines here until Biden got all the contracts until the pharmacies and started sending directly there. Before that only the rich counties, and even specific rich subdivisions, were able to receive the services and they got theirs in Jan. from DeathSentence. There are still no walk up clinics here and our rate is only 34.4% - same as last week!

(128,963 posts)I've been yelling that from day one.
At this point, get it to the neighborhood pharmacies and supermarkets. Get one of those big Red Cross Bloodmobile-style mobile trailers and set up shop in neighborhoods and town squares.
And I hate to say it but for months, although they correctly focused on the older citizens, who were most at risk to severe effects and deaths, they did it so vehemently while essentially dismissing the very people (the younger adults) were actually the "carriers" and were spreading it - if anything because of their natural and higher tendency to engage in the "riskier" activities. And it was done to such a degree that they completely turned that group off, and apparently many gave up and figured "why bother?".
I think a lot of the "hesitancy" argument, particularly with certain demographics as they have been discovering here in Philly, is not "hesitancy" about the vaccine at all - at least in the urban areas. It's "hesitancy" about the hoops that had to be jumped to get one - "online registrations" (in a city where some of the most vulnerable communities lack internet and computers), "online fighting off others to get appointments" like some concert ticket lottery, providers in locations that even if along public transit routes, were a hassle for many to have plan for, hours for vaccines not conducive for many who work who could not take off during the day to get one.
I can imagine that the "Lessons Learned" exercise on this pandemic and the (continued) aftermath, will be a doozy.
