UAW: Detroit 3 autoworkers to keep masks on at work -- for now

The UAW announced Wednesday that General Motors, Ford and Stellantis won't be relaxing mask mandates for work sites until getting more guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
A task force made up of representatives from all three companies and the UAW made the decision to stay the course on mask rules adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news release from the UAW. The group will meet again in two weeks.
"We know that masks can be uncomfortable, but we ask that everyone comply ... Detroit Three worksites will continue to wear masks onsite to be as cautious as possible with worker health and safety," the release said, noting that everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated "so we can move more quickly toward continuing to relax our protocols."
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its guidelines, saying fully vaccinated people can go without masks in many, not all, situations. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Friday that Michigan would repeal its mask mandate for fully vaccinated people. Unvaccinated people are still supposed to wear their masks indoors in many cases.
