Cops Who Fist-Bumped While Watching Video of Themselves Injuring Woman with Dementia Are Charged
Source: People
Two former police officers are facing criminal charges in Colorado stemming from the violent June 26, 2020, arrest of a 73-year-old woman who suffers from dementia.
Austin Hopp and Daria Jalali both resigned on April 30 after body camera footage surfaced showing the forceful detention of Karen Garner last summer.
Hopp on Wednesday was charged with two felonies: second-degree assault of an at-risk adult and attempt to influence a public servant. According to the latter charge, Hopp allegedly failed to report the seriousness of Garner's injuries to his superiors. Hopp was also charged with misdemeanor first-degree official misconduct.
Jalali was charged with failure to report excessive use of force, failure to intervene in the use of excessive force and first-degree official misconduct all misdemeanors.

(8,820 posts)to manhandle a small, frail 72? Year old woman who is mentally impaired........Same for all his co-conspirators including the woman starved for approval from the men she works with...
Someone(s) higher up in the loveland police dept and government were all in on the cover up...............
All four or five cops that were involved should be prosecuted for assault and battery on charges incuding aggravated assault on an older person at risk individual............
Loveland Mayor, police chief and D.A. should also get time for complicity.
I'm not sure, but an assault on an elderly person is most likely a Federal Offense.....especially by a person of Trust.....
The longest term of imprisonment should be for the REAL MAN who broke her humerus and dislocated her shoulder, to prove his masculinity should be sentenced to prison, and put in with the General Population.....
Mr. REAL MAN is an extremely insecure person, who is also a chicken shit and pussy.......

(14,891 posts)I had not heard this part (of her being detained from care) till now! 😠😠😠
I hate bullies, esp those with real power to effect people's lives. I'm a young elder, usually clear minded, I guess moderately sturdy but I've had two nasty injuries by my own fault one at ?38 one at 59.
That was bad enough, but at least I was (still) very cogent, and able to help direct my rehab when having to be at a nursing home/rehabilitation facilry for several weeks (after ankle surgery). And outside support from family, and friends.
And to be in extra pain because of the scum not getting her proper care very soon after. Was her injury aggravated?! AAAaaarrrrgggg!
(when I'm extra tired I get even more sensitive)
But this woman has impaired cognition, how extra scary for her to be struck, injured, then detained.
Who does she have. How confusing will rehab be for her.

(81,486 posts)In 1967, the Supreme Court carved out a qualified immunity exception that helps government officials: They couldnt be sued if they were acting in good faith and didnt know what they were doing was illegal. Over the years, the court expanded that doctrine so that now, even police officers who knowingly violate someones rights are protectedunless a court has ruled that their behavior was unconstitutional in a previous case involving nearly identical circumstances.
Last year, for example, a federal appeals court found that a police officer who shot a 10-year-old by mistake while aiming for the familys dog was protected from liability under qualified immunity. The judges ruled that he couldnt be held responsible because there wasnt a previous case where an officer was found at fault in almost identical circumstances.

They brutalized her. They might as well have murdered her.

(4,552 posts)Anyone with half a brain can see something is wrong with her response and demeanor.
Anyone with a speck of humanity could see it.
What is going on with the police in our nation?
They laughed and joked about breaking an 80 pound woman's arm.
I do not have the words to deal with that.
It is the same as kneeling on a handcuffed man's neck with your hand in your pocket.
Zero humanity!

(11,807 posts)....celebrate hurting an elderly lady who is clearly suffering from something that doesn't allow her to fully and correctly process instructions, directions, or even have a full grasp of things going on around her. I simply can't get my brain around that level of depravity.
