May 21 (UPI) -- The Biden administration has announced it will close two Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities accused of mistreating immigrant detainees.
Homeland Security announced the closures of the C. Carlos Carreiro Immigration Detention Center in North Dartmouth, Mass., and the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Ga., in a statement Thursday.
"Allow me to state one foundational principle: We will not tolerate the mistreatment of individuals in civil immigration detention or substandard conditions of detention," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a memo to ICE Acting Director Tae Johnson.
The memo directs ICE to transfer all remaining detained non-citizens from the North Dartmouth facility and to terminate its contract with the Bristol County Sheriff's Office as it "is no longer operationally needed."
