Police Chief Rips 'Ridiculous' Texas Handgun Measure, Predicts 'a Lot More Bloodshed'

Source: Newsweek

Police Chief Art Acevedo called a new measure approved by Texas state lawmakers on handguns "ridiculous" on Sunday, stating it was a dangerous gamble with safety and lives.

The measure would allow people to carry handguns without a license, disregarding the background checks or safety measures that go along with it.

Previously the police chief in Houston and now Miami, Acevedo discussed the "constitutional carry" measure on Face the Nation with host John Dickerson.

"There's something that God gave us and that is common sense, and common sense tells us that that is ridiculous," Acevedo stated when asked about the measure. "Law enforcement, police chiefs, sheriffs, police, labor...stood up together and made it real clear we do not support constitutional carry here in Texas or anywhere in this country.

first, ignoring the covid virus which killed hundreds, second, the electrical system failure during cold snap, which killed hundreds. And now this..

You'd almost think Abbot was trying to kill off the population of Texas.

After all of the school shootings, police tactical response has changed. It is no longer, wait for the SWAT team. It is now first on first in. So one maybe two police officers enter the building. They see bodies down. They see a man standing in an aisle pointing a gun at someone, anyone, nobody. Is he the shooter is is he some Barney Fife wanna be that can now carry a gun anywhere. That will be one of the next police shooting in Texas. Innocent people are going to get shot and killed simply because they are allowed to carry a gun. No background checks. No nothing. Those police officers have no idea who the man with the gun is, but they will stop him from pulling the trigger. This idea that honest people carrying guns will help stop these mass shooting is nonsense. Maybe, but more likely they will be the first ones shot.

Makes you wonder if maybe some of the the arguments of the 1780s about voting rights should be revisited.

A couple of guys had robbed a jewelry store in a mall and were running away, so the good guy pulls out his gun and starts shooting. The robbers then shoot back, killing a shopper who was in the area. They got away, but the shopper died and the good guy caused it because the robbers were leaving and did not use their guns until he did.

Guns are everywhere here, and I’m no longer feeling safe in stores or malls. I think we will have a decade of deaths and so many shootings that even the Republican voters start saying enough. Even now, we have so many guns that even stricter regulations will not stop the carnage. Guns are easy to get. The media’s lies and stirring up anger and hatred is what needs to be addressed.

Why? I don't know. I guess republicans still think they owe the NRA favors for their campaign contributions. You'd think they delivered enough for them over the decades, but I guess new blood sacrifices are expected.

It only need's Abbott's signature, and that's a certainty.
I know this is Texas and they really hold their guns dear, but I'm still amazed at the stupidity of the Texas government.
A person can do time for armed robbery, or assault with a gun, and, when they are released it's straight off to the gun shop for re-arming.
Virtually anyone can come in from anywhere and purchase a no questions asked gun or ten.

There is no way any good can come from this.

and they won't realize it. I can see a lot more ordering online rather than going into stores where any and all can open carry. Who is there to shoot the place up or just look tough.

Should parents take their children to events where anyone can be is armed? Isn't that putting children in harm's way?

NRA supporters would rather have dead children than gun control.

To the gun industry, dead children are merely collateral damage/acceptable losses for gun industry profits and political donations.

The battle is lost when people use the same language as propagandists.

Every time that phrase is mentioned in media it is a victory for whoever invented such a stupid slogan.

The battle for peoples’ minds depends on recognizing the theater of war.

Were there scores of legal gun owners somehow being inconvenienced by permits they qualified for? The law will create more problems than it solves by creating at least one: illegal gun owners can now blend in with the law abiding, packing heat.

With other gop laws, you could at least point to a fake problem conjured up to justify the law.

One guy starts shooting then everybody gets in the fray. Shoot the guy with the gun...... OH WAIT everyone has a gun.... let's see who should I shoot first.

And now why wouldn't the cops wait outside until the shooting stops. And the body count is stable. I guess they will have to let God separate the good guys from the original shooter. Sound like a PLAN.

My plan, never to visit Texas ever again!

For the safety of their workers.

Can you imagine your company saying they’re moving to Texas and you quit because you want to keep your family safe from gun violence. It could cause a brain drain.

In the beginning of the year I packed up a rich Jewish family who was moving from Palo Alto, Ca to Austin Texas. I wonder how they did with storm in February and now with these insane gun laws and increased anti Semitic environment.
