Florida bans 'critical race theory' from its classrooms

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida's state Board of Education banned "critical race theory" from public school classrooms Thursday, adopting new rules it said would shield schoolchildren from curricula that could "distort historical events."

Florida's move was widely expected as a national debate intensifies about how race should be used as a lens in classrooms to examine the country's tumultuous history.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared by video at the top of the board's meeting, urging its members, many of whom he appointed, to adopt the new measures he asserted would serve students with the facts rather than "trying to indoctrinate them with ideology."

The Black Lives Matter movement has helped bring contentious discussions about race to the forefront of American discourse, and classrooms have become a battleground. Supporters contend that federal law has preserved the unequal treatment of people on the basis of race and that the country was founded on the theft of land and labor.

On science, they've put road blocks up against evolution and climate change. On health, they've opposed steps to prevent the spread of COVID 19. Now they know all about history.

Sorry folks, you can't dismiss gravity because you pass a law outlawing it. People can still read and discuss all of this and make up their own minds. If you constantly lie to them, they'll eventually figure it out and totally mock you. Just like those in the Soviet Union knew their "worker's paradise" was total bullish-t.

I remember learning about the civil war and slavery in the 1960’s in grade school. It wasn’t until college that I learned more in-depth about the racism in this country.

Ironically when you do a ban on teaching something it only makes kids more curious to learn about it. Raising awareness will come back to bite DeSatan and these other right wing idiots in the ass.

it's easy to make a bumper sticker when everything is black and white (not meant to be a pun).

It's harder to teach the shades of grey which is the world in which we really live. Harder to get the message across on a bumper sticker. And unfortunately, that's all the attention span these RWNJ's have.

Critical race theorists attack the very foundations of the liberal legal order, including equality theory,' legal reasoning, 5 Enlightenment rationalism' and neutral principles of constitutional law.' These liberal
values, they allege, have no enduring basis in principle, but are mere social constructs calculated to legitimate white supremacy. 8 The rule of law, according to critical race theorists, is a false promise of principled government, and they have lost patience with false promises.' For them, the practice of law is just another front in the fight to achieve racial "liberation." 10 The "race-crits," as they call themselves,'' identify less with the
egalitarian integrationists who led the non-violent civil rights movement than with the black nationalists of the late 1960s who demanded "black power."' 2 While critical race theorists purport to share the liber-
als' goal of racial and social justice, they view that endeavor not as a matter of principle, but as a matter of simple group interest to be
achieved "by any means necessary." 13 They have no qualms arguing for jury nullification on the basis of racial affinity," hate-speech codes which criminalize bigoted expression'' or group rights doctrines which
would allow victims of historic racism to sue whites as a group for reparations.' 6 The harmful precedents such measures would establish is of little concern to the race-crits—their goal is minority advancement
at all costs.' 7 This Note criticizes CRT as au unprincipled, divisive and ultimately unhelpful attack on the liberal tradition ill America." First, race-crits fail to offer replacements for liberalism's core values.'• Rath-
er, their postmodern rejection of all principles leaves them entirely "critical," while their narrow, interested stance renders them mere advocates within the liberal legal system, not theorists who might offer
better alternatives. 20 Second, despite their undeniable energy, the race-emits are remarkably unhelpful as legal and political advocates within the liberal system.

99% of GQP quaking in terror at the thought of any of this entering a curriculum couldn't explain it if you held a gun to their heads. Nor can the Propagandists exploiting it to stir up resentments for November 2022.

concept and turned it into a slogan.

OTOH, I think it's amazing that students are gaining exposure to critical theory before college. Students in states where school discussions of critical race theory are banned will gain exposure to the concept through social media and the news.

Critical theory has endured for as long as it has because it's a useful tool for questioning a system and why it persists. It is something that can't be unwound from scholarship.

Now mind you, I teach about ethnicity and gender, but I don't go down the theory path with undergrads... so even I don't teach CRT. At a major research university.
