Trudeau says no deal on lifting border restrictions after talks with Biden
Source: The Hill
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday that he and President Biden hadn't reached a deal about lifting coronavirus border restrictions after discussing the matter. Trudeau said during a press conference that he spoke with Biden about lifting the ban on nonessential travel between the U.S. and Canada. The restrictions were imposed in March 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both U.S. and Canadian business leaders have complained about the border restrictions, which lowered tourist travel between the two countries, affecting Canadian businesses and airlines that depend on tourism, Reuters noted. Trudeau said Canada needs more of its citizens to be vaccinated before border restrictions are lifted, adding that he will work closely with the Biden administration to be on the right path. 4. So, what exactly is "there" ?
Is it zero cases? If so, we're never, ever going to get to zero cases. At some point soon, we have to restore the world back to where it was. We have the virus under control. Re-opening should be our highest priority at this point.

21. I guess. I don't know what the metric should be.
I only know the toothpaste is out of the tube in this country, and getting another 10% of this blockheaded population vaxxed is going to be nearly impossible.
Trudeau's going to have to find something he can live with - showing your vax card, an attestation, a negative test. He can't keep the hordes out forever; Canada needs our money. |

22. How about requiring all Medicare and Medicaid recipients get vaccinated?
There are about 140 million Americans on either one. Why not require them to get vaccinated in order to continue to receive the benefit? How about giving special dispensation to health insurance companies to raise premiums for those that refuse the vaccine? How about letting companies require people to get vaccinated or face OSHA fines.
Too many people are not fully understanding nor showing the necessary commitment to return to normal. It's scary how easy it is for people to restrict individual freedom, but when it comes to mandating taking the vaccines, they go full Rand Paul/Libertarian. |

24. I don't think that Biden will require anything.
The (over)reaction would be "Death Panel Plus" among the know-nothing vax-defiance crowd.
A bribery program is much more likely. Pay people to get the shot. They're already handing them out in grocery stores. |

30. Tourism is important to both countries, but more so the US

7. Control means that the virus does not overwhelm healthcare resources
Looking at the global rates of hospitalizations and deaths. The virus does not kill any more than other maladies.

20. "Control means that the virus does not overwhelm healthcare resources."
Humm.. not sure I agree.
Heart disease doesn't overwhelm healthcare resources but certainly is not under control. And heart disease or cancer, etc do not spread in aerosols or from person to person contact..... So if someone has stomach cancer s/he is not a danger to me. |

23. If you're fully vaccinated, you have nothing to fear from covid either.
If you do get it, you won't have to seek care in the hospital. That's what it means by having the disease under control.

25. I may be pretty safe.
But not enough people are fully vaccinated yet, in the US or the world in general. So the danger of covid-19 as a pandemic is still a very real threat..

27. It's not as big of a threat than a multitude of other things. For example, global poverty for one.
Extreme poverty kills more people than does COVID-19 but we don't lock down the world to fight it.

29. Seriously, what a weird comparison.
Apples and elephants, for sure.
Trudeau said Canada needs more of its citizens to be vaccinated before border restrictions are lifted. That makes sense to me. Much easier to make sure Canadians are protected than to try to keep the unvaxxed idiots out. |

18. Nobody said zero cases.
-Nobody said zero cases. -The world will never be restored to “back the way it was.” Nothing goes back to the way it was. Everything is in change. -I still do not agree that the virus is under control. -Our highest priority should not be “re-opening.” It should be getting 80-90% (?) of the world population vaccinated or enough to slow the spread of covid to the point that it’s replication is so slow it is not a global danger. |

In the US, it's safe to fill stadiums. In Canada it's dangerous to fill restaurants.

I would say 'safer' not totally safe...
It is not safe to fill restaurants in the USA either. |

13. Totally agree. I want a vaccine passport. For my safety and the safety of other travellers.
We got a paper card that indicates we got our vaccinations. Anyone with the technology could in 30 minutes produce a FAKE card to be sold or used to "indicate" the carrier of the card has been vaccinated.
We need an addendum to our current passports as a government certification of vaccination. |

We live in NY-21 along the St Lawrence River. We love (and miss) Ottawa and Montreal SO MUCH. They’re basically our only close centers of culture.
Patience! It’ll happen, just wish it would come in the good weather and not delay until like October. |
