GOP's Stefanik defends Trump DOJ secret subpoenas

Source: The Hill

House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) on Tuesday defended the Justice Department's efforts to secretly seize phone, email and other records from a pair of House Democratic lawmakers, their aides and reporters as officials aggressively pursued leak investigations during the Trump era.

Stefanik serves on the House Intelligence Committee, alongside two California Democrats and vocal critics of former President Donald Trump, Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff and Rep. Eric Swalwell, who had their records subpoenaed without their knowledge.

But Stefanik, a Trump loyalist who recently replaced Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) in the House GOP leadership, alleged that Schiff and others on the Intelligence Committee had inappropriately leaked information to the press in the past.

"Having served on the House Intelligence Committee, we've seen illegal leaks from our colleagues on the House Intelligence Committee, and there have been numerous referrals to the Department of Justice," Stefanik said at a news conference Tuesday. "So I think it's important that the Department of Justice determine if there were any illegal leaks, leaks by members of Congress, or their staff members.

First, she states they've seen illegal leaks from her colleagues on the committee, the she state DOJ should investigate to determine IF there were any illegal leaks? She accuses dems of breaking the law, then ask for investigation to see if they broke the law.

She's should just STFU!

.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) on Friday succeeded in her efforts to replace Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) as the GOP conference chair.

But it was her comments after winning the vote that resulted in a brutal fact-check from CNN.

"We see the worst jobs report in over 20 years," Stefanik said in reference to the April jobs report released last Friday. "Unemployment is up, small businesses are struggling to hire workers."

But the worst jobs report in 20 years actually came under former President Donald Trump.

"It is simply untrue that the April jobs report is the worst in two decades. Just over one year ago, the US economy experienced its largest one-month decline in job numbers in recorded history. The most recent jobs report did fall significantly below forecasts but is in no way the 'worst jobs report in over 20 years,' or even the past year," CNN reported. "In April 2020, the US economy lost 20.5 million jobs, following a loss of 870,000 jobs in March of that year. This was far and away the most significant decrease since the US began tracking the number in 1939."

Trump was president during March and April of 2020.

"April's job report showed the US added 266,000 jobs while forecasts from economists had predicted something closer to a million jobs added that month," CNN noted. "Republicans have used this significant forecast miss to criticize Biden and his policies. Stefanik, however, did not say this was the worst report relative to economist expectations, she just said it was the worst. Stefanik's office did not respond to CNN's request for comment."

Stefanik's hard-right shift is not at all 'like Anakin turning into Darth Vader': The Daily Show

"Now, to outsiders, this might have seemed like Stefanik suddenly embracing the Dark Side. You know, like Anakin [Skywalker] turning into Darth Vader -- except for the part about wearing a mask. But the truth is, she probably just made a straightforward calculation," he explained. "She saw where the party was going, and she decided to go along with it."

"You know, it's just a little awkward to start rooting for someone after being publicly disgraced," he added, with a joke about R. Kelly.

Elise Stefanik started her career as a “normal Republican,” distancing herself from Trump as he ran for president.

Then came the radicalization.

New York is probably losing a district. It's time to fight fire with fire - they need to reconfigure so that two Republicans lose their districts.

I can see her district being absorbed into the 20th and 22nd.

20th is my mother's hometown area of Utica, is PVI R+9 and has a Republican from New Hartford (suburb of Utica).
22nd is the capital district, is PVI D+7 and has a Democrat.

Stefanik's district is PVI R+8, so it would dilute some of 22 and enhance the Republican hold on 20.

What is frustrating is how blue the districts in NYC are - Democrats just basically have to have a warm body to win.

Whatever happens, they need to add some more of Brooklyn or some of Manhattan to the Staten Island district and get rid of Malliotakis. Jerry Nadler's district snakes from Manhattan into Brooklyn and he won it 75 - 25 last year.

Also, there needs to be some way to "stretch" NYC out further onto Long Island to pick up one or both of the Republican seats there. Those three districts might be better pickup opportunities than Stefanik's district, although she deserves to have her ass kicked out of Congress.

Correcting my numbers. Wonder if I am mistaking the stats for the first time Tedra challenged her.

In any event, we need to come up with a very strong contender this time. They have to be moderate and unapologetic. It is a very difficult tightrope for sure.

The first time she faced Cobb, in 2018, it was 56 - 42, with the Green Party candidate getting the remainder.

You might be thinking of 2016, when Stefanik won 66 - 29 against Mike Derrick. That was her largest margin of victory.
