Southern Baptists vote to debate sex abuse investigation

Source: AP

By TRAVIS LOLLER and PETER SMITH

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to have a floor debate on a proposed investigation into the denomination’s handling of sexual abuse.

The SBC’s business committee had planned to refer the proposal to its Executive Committee — the same entity alleged to have failed in its response to abuse cases — but the vote put the measure back out on the floor for discussion in the afternoon.

The previous day, Tennessee pastor Grant Gaines proposed setting up an independent task force to lead the investigation. That came in response to leaked letters and secret recordings purporting to show some leaders tried to slow-walk accountability efforts and intimidate and retaliate against those who advocated on the issue.

The allegations involve the Executive Committee, which conducts denomination business outside of the annual meetings. Committee president Ronnie Floyd has defended the body’s response, but last week he announced that the panel had retained an outside consulting firm to investigate the claims.

and make sure any guilty pastors pay no price while they vilify the Jezebel women. Organized religion is nothing kore than a cabal of religious extremists who think they were specially anointed to proclaim God’s will.

to condemn the Catholic church. For what they themselves do. They just don't limit themselves to choir boys. The deacon is screwing the organist, the youth director has a thing going with a 16 year old girl, the pastor beats his kids. And these are all true events that happened in one middle size deep south town.

No longer a Baptist or Christian, in the usual sense of the word.

In the late 70s early 80s we had a minister of childhood education mysteriously and suddenly disappear. And this was before the total conservative takeover of the denomination.

Years later I learned from my father, who was a deacon at the time that the dude was caught in a local park in his car with a teen boy. So of course he admitted he was gay, his wife left him and he left the church, right? Oh no, got the same type job at a church in Mississippi. Happy family and all.

They are as bad as he Catholics were. Just rearranging the pieces on the board.
