Washington Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has circulated a list of demands for voting legislation among his Democratic colleagues, indicating he may be willing to consider a revised version of the sweeping voting and elections reform bill that the Senate will take up at the end of the month.
Manchin previously expressed his opposition to S. 1, known as the For the People Act, raising concerns about passing partisan voting legislation. Supporters of the bill note that several Republican-led states are advancing laws that would restrict voting rights along party lines, and say that S. 1 is necessary to counter these actions.
Manchin told reporters on Wednesday that he had shared with his colleagues "things I can support and vote with" in the For the People Act.
"People were assuming that I was against S. 1, because there was no Republicans supporting it. That's not the case at all," Manchin said. "I said basically, you should not pass any type of a voter bill in the most divisive time of our life unless you have some unity on this thing, because you just divide the country further."
According to a copy of the list obtained by CBS News, these areas of support include provisions banning partisan gerrymandering and mandating at least 15 consecutive days of early voting for federal elections. Manchin's list also includes areas of compromise relating to ethics and campaign finance.

(5,524 posts)What is the difference between
..." was against S. 1, because there was no Republicans supporting it"
versus
..."should not pass any type of a voter bill...unless you have some unity on this thing"
Aside from all that, what difference does it make to get to 50 if we still need 60. Support for the bill without killing the filibuster is irrelevant unless he can convince 10 of them to come along.

(2,577 posts)He contends that Manchin is Mr. Dark Money, especially dark money coming from Koch.
We really needed to get some additional Senate seats in 2020 so that BS coming from Manchin and Sinema would not be so a BFD.

EVERYONE "gerrymanders" when they get the chance; always.
"It's gerrymandering when *they* do it" is a joke almost 200 years old.

(135 posts)Because it's not about voter ID to them, it's about keeping people from voting who aren't likely to vote for them. Showing a utility bill with your name and address on it is a reasonable form of verification for things like unemployment benefits, but won't work for the homeless or for anyone with a PO box address. It'll disenfranchise native americans and retired persons living the RV life.
What's the old saying about a good compromise results in no one being happy?

(3,495 posts)tilting wind mills and Sid Barrett song compilations. The later story goes that Syd came to a session with members of the band and told them about a new song he was working on called "Do Ya Get It". After painstakingly walking the other members through playing his composition he'd stop them and go "No, no, no. It's like this...", then proceed with a completely different construction. It took the other band members a couple of iterations before they figured out the true meaning of Syd's song.

(778 posts)His efforts are naive, clumsy, ignorant and stupid and ultimately will be futile. However, he is at least working at what he professes to believe. Sinema, however....is a worthless show horse, preens before the cameras and ultimately shows nothing of substance, no work, no proposals, nothin' but showboating obstructionism and then disappears. At some level, I can at least accept tacitly that Manchin is trying, Sinema however, is as worthless as they come. She seems to be under the delusion that fucking people over increases her worth amongst humanity. I increasingly feel like barfin' every time I see her poke her phony face in front of the cameras to try and prove her relevance.
