Delta Plus: Scientists Say Too Early To Tell Risk of Covid-19 Variant

Source: BBC News

India has classified a new variant of the coronavirus first identified in Europe as a "variant of concern", but it's too early to tell whether it poses a significant threat. India's health ministry says studies showed that the so-called Delta plus variant - also known as AY.1 - spreads more easily, binds more easily to lung cells and is potentially resistant to monoclonal antibody therapy, a potent intravenous infusion of antibodies to neutralise the virus.

The variant is related to the Delta, an existing variant of concern, which was first identified in India last year and is thought to have driven the deadly second wave of infections this summer in India.

The health ministry says the Delta plus variant, first found in India in April, has been detected in around 40 samples from six districts in three states - Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. At least 16 of these samples were found in Maharashtra, one of the states hardest hit by the pandemic.

Delta plus has also been found in nine other countries - USA, UK, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Nepal, Russia and China - compared to the original highly contagious Delta strain, which has now spread to 80 countries...

- "Delta Plus": The health minister in India's Maharashtra state has ordered staff to "closely monitor" cases of a COVID-19 variant they have identified locally as the "Delta Plus." India said Wednesday it has found about 40 cases of the new variant carrying a mutation that scientists are concerned could make it more transmissible.

Variant cases in the country have been seen in the states of Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, but are also being seen in other countries including one in Canada and 83 in the U.S. - Global News, June 23, 2021.

These mutations never seem to make the virus weaker, only exponentially stronger.

As of June 16, at least 197 cases has been found from 11 countries - Britain (36), Canada (1), India (8), Japan (15), Nepal (3), Poland (9), Portugal (22), Russia (1), Switzerland (18), Turkey (1), the United States (83).

So it isn't a lot of cases, but it is widespread in that it is in a lot of countries.

but it is India - with only 8 cases - to be sounding the alarm about this? We wouldn't know if it were not for information from India? Are we so bad at testing for variants? Geesh
