Turkey formally quits treaty to prevent violence against women

Source: Reuters

Turkey officially withdrew on Thursday from an international treaty to prevent violence against women, enacting a decision that drew condemnation from many Turks and Western allies when President Tayyip Erdogan announced it in March.

Thousands were set to protest across Turkey, where a court appeal to halt the withdrawal was rejected this week.

"We will continue our struggle," Canan Gullu, president of the Federation of Turkish Women's Associations, said on Wednesday. "Turkey is shooting itself in the foot with this decision."

She said that since March, women and other vulnerable groups had been more reluctant to ask for help and less likely to receive it, with COVID-19 fuelled economic difficulties causing a dramatic increase in violence against them.

Geographically Turkey and the surrounding states are one of the most important, if not the most important pieces of dirt strategically in the world. For more than 3k years this area is where the great powers of the east and west in history converge, and it is still such even today.

Erdagon is a malignant infection to the stability of the region and his ego has been re-enforced and coddled by the former administration. He is the Biden administrations next challenge, IMO more important than China or Russia ATM. Is there irony that when the Biden administration orders airstrikes in Syria 72 hours later Erdagon comes back with this? He's a nut job of the likes of TFG and is one of the new reign fascists that need to learn TFG was an aberration and did not speak for the majority of the American people. or the free democracies of the world.

There is no reason to punish the Turkish people for this lunatic. Turkey's history on the rights of women over the last century outpaced many western democracies including ours to some extent. That ideology is still firmly planted. I fully expect the Biden administration and NATO to begin to play hardball with this evil fascist over the next 6 months. His day in the sun ended last November.

but to be fair and transparent, we've never ratified our own regional treaty to prevent violence against women (Belem do Para) nor have we ratified the UN CEDAW treaty. And many countries that have signed and ratified treaties like this have some of the highest rates of violence against women.
