Death toll rises to 32 as Surfside condo collapse rescue effort faces challenges from Tropical Storm

SURFSIDE, Fla. Bands of rain from an approaching tropical storm and a forecast that includes possible tornadoes added to the hurdles faced by rescue workers seeking signs of life Tuesday among the ruins of the Miami-area condominium collapse.
Four more bodies were found, raising the death toll to 32, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Tuesday. She said 26 of the victims had been identified.
Levine Cava said 113 people remain unaccounted for, although "only around 70 of those are people we have been able to confirm were in fact in the building" when it fell.
Authorities remained steadfast in describing the effort as search and rescue, 12 days after the stunning collapse at the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, a few miles north of Miami Beach. Photos of dozens of victims and those missing are displayed nearby on a makeshift Surfside Wall of Hope & Memorial.

(107,956 posts)SURFSIDE, Fla.Search teams found four more bodies at the Champlain Towers South site, bringing the total number of confirmed dead to 36, with as many as 109 people unaccounted for, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.
The area was hit by the outer bands of Tropical Storm Elsa on Tuesday, with strong winds hampering the cranes that were removing debris. Lightning halted rescue and recovery efforts for periods of time, Ms. Levine Cava said. The storm, moving up the Gulf Coast of the Florida peninsula, could become a hurricane before making landfall early Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
While crews continued the rescue and recovery mission Tuesday, officials were discussing how much longer the rescue effort would last, Miami-Dade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky said. Since the morning of June 24, when a large portion of the condo collapsed, no one has been rescued.
Mourners gathered Tuesday afternoon in heavy rain for one of the first memorial services for victims, the funeral Mass for Marcus and Ana Guara and their daughters, Lucia, 11, and Emma, 4.

(107,956 posts)SURFSIDE, Fla. The death toll in the condo building collapse rose to 46 after workers extricated 10 more victims from the rubble, authorities said Wednesday.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava fought back tears as she made the announcement, in English and Spanish, adding that 32 of the victims had been identified and family members notified.
Levine Cava said that more than 90 people remain unaccounted for. Detectives are working to determine if the missing were actually in the building when it fell, she said.
Strong winds from Tropical Storm Elsa caused some issues Tuesday with cranes brought in to move debris, but the storm mostly bypassed the area, authorities said.

(9,008 posts)oh, but ain't it great to have low-reg states!
as long as it's not YOUR life.
You think Florida will tighten up regulations after this? If they do anything, it will likely be cosmetic only, or I will be pleasantly surprised. Today's Republicans are not known for caring for "people" all that much (unless they have a lot of money)
