The signal of the vaccine’s vast efficacy in Maryland comes after early data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week indicated nearly all of the U.S.’ coronavirus-linked deaths are now among unvaccinated people. An analysis of CDC data by the Associated Press found 99.2% of the 18,000 Americans who died from Covid-19 in May were not fully vaccinated against the virus. Meanwhile, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky went even further and said at a White House briefing last Tuesday that the preliminary data reviewed by her agency suggests 99.5% of the people who died from the virus over the past six months were unvaccinated.

“Any suffering or death from Covid-19 is tragic,” Walensky said. “With vaccines available across the country, the suffering and loss we are seeing is entirely avoidable.”

While the data released so far by U.S. state and federal health officials indicates a stark relationship between vaccination and protection from severe Covid-19, some highly vaccinated countries are still suffering from virus surges due to vaccination gaps and the threat of the more infectious delta variant. An Israeli study published Monday also indicated Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine is significantly less effective at preventing infection with the delta variant than with previous strains of the virus. All this has driven American public health experts to emphasize the urgent need for vaccinations, particularly in parts of the country that are lagging behind the national rate of nearly 70% partial inoculation.

Maryland has seen its cases, hospitalizations and deaths plummet since early this year. According to The New York Times’ vaccine tracker, it is one of the most vaccinated states in the country, with nearly 75% of adults at least partially vaccinated against the virus and over 68% fully vaccinated. As of Tuesday, Maryland is reporting an average of 65 new cases, 303 new hospitalizations and 2 new deaths a day (numbers that have all declined from the prior two weeks).

Someone here on DU has posted that her child who is a doctor, says they've seen something like 8 people, young, healthy, fully vaccinated, die in a very short time. I keep on questioning that. Young, healthy, fully vaccinated? And if they're dying of Covid, something is very much amiss.

I think that a lot of actual underlying conditions are not being acknowledged. I'm thinking the primary one is obesity. Last year, when I saw posts about young, healthy people dying of Covid, if there was a name attached, I'd google that person. Invariably, the photo that came up was of someone who was clearly very overweight, most likely obese. This is NOT fat shaming. Obesity is a real thing. And unfortunately it's a huge risk factor in Covid.

I suspect the Israeli data set is too small to glean good stats from.

This is anecdotal too, so take it with a grain of salt, but I know a research MD at NIH who indicated to me the data she is seeing indicates protection from the mRNA vaccines to be in the high 80's for the Delta variant, though she cautioned, the dataset is still relatively small.

Post a story on media that use fact checkers and I might pay attention to it.

We know fully vaccinated people are getting the Delta variant. Some of them are ill enough to go to the hospital. What we don't know is how many have died, and what the percentage works out to.

I am not surprised by breakthrough infections, the mRNA vaccines were rated 91% effective in trials, the J&J vaccine in the 70s%.

It's still the best chance we have of controlling this thing.

Now he claims it was no big deal, though he was sick in bed for 2 weeks, and also that he got it not from his trumper crowd, but, get this, from a cab driver whose cab he was in for a half hour. He made sure to tell me the cabbie was Muslim.

He has no evidence this cabbie even had Covid... just has to be him and not the disease-ridden Trump buddies. So he's perfectly capable of denying his own experience.

It was repube Bill Dannemeyer of CA who gave a speech titled "What Homosexuals Do" and read quite graphic descriptions of sex acts into the Congressional Record. It wasnt until many years later when Ryan White, who had contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion, became the innocent poster boy for the disease, that the repubes had compassion and smarts regarding HIV.

In Wisconsin, 95% of COVID-19 deaths since March were among locals who were unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, state health officials said.

The state recorded 21 COVID-19 deaths that were "breakthrough cases," meaning patients who caught coronavirus 14 days or more after completing the vaccine series, out of 433 total deaths from March 1 to June 24. Such cases accounted for just 5% of deaths in that time frame, Wisconsin's Department of Health shared with ABC News.

Data shows the chance of catching COVID-19 after getting vaccinated is very low.

Wisconsin reported 1,572 confirmed and probable "breakthrough cases," which amounted to 1% of total COVID-19 cases from Jan. 1 through June 24. The number of "breakthrough cases" is also a small fraction of the more than 2.9 million fully vaccinated people in the state.
