Russia against US troops in Central Asia near Afghanistan

Source: Associated Press

Russia has strongly warned the United States against deploying its troops in the former Soviet Central Asian nations following their withdrawal from Afghanistan, a senior diplomat said in remarks published on Tuesday.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Moscow conveyed the message to Washington during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s summit with U.S. President Joe Biden in Geneva last month.

The warning comes as the U.S. military said last week that 90% of the withdrawal of U.S. troops and equipment from Afghanistan is complete. Biden said the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan will conclude on Aug. 31.

“I would emphasize that the redeployment of the American permanent military presence to the countries neighboring Afghanistan is unacceptable,” Ryabkov said. “We told the Americans in a direct and straightforward way that it would change a lot of things not only in our perceptions of what’s going on in that important region, but also in our relations with the United States.”

but not now. This article just sounds like sloppy reporting from AP. I'm guessing Russia is trying to assert their dominance in the region.

C-130 to Kandahar
As a Cold War baby it was surreal to be on a old Soviet bomber base, still had the big bunker style hangers to protect their planes from near by US nuclear strikes.

That one is so damned open to interpretation. Had they even considered merely using the more appropriate term "opposes" rather than "Russia against" which could have meant that Russia was engaged against US troops.

My pet peeve of the morning--the loss of editors and editing even among stalwarts like the AP.

Don't mind me...just have to vent.

Maybe it's an American English/British English thing (or American media English/British media English). And perhaps they wrote it for an international audience, who might not use the American media shorthand (though I'm aware AP is American).

Yes, 'opposes' would have worked; but I, a native English speaker, would not have seen the problem that you Americans see. It's possible that AP uses non-Americans to write headlines for international stories.

And, on reflection, "opposes" is just as open to the same misinterpretation as 'against'.

They both have considerable influence in Central Asia and would love nothing more than for us to be boxed out.

They're saying the US doesn't have a reason to keep troops in the region anymore since the Afghanistan war is over.
