At least 21 dead in 'catastrophic' flooding in western Germany
Source: The Guardian
At least 21 people have died and dozens are missing or awaiting rescue from rooftops after heavy rain and floods caused buildings to collapse in the western German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North-Rhine Westphalia.
In the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Schuld, set in the Eifel mountain range, police said on Thursday morning they were searching for about 70 missing people following the collapse of six houses. At least eight people are confirmed to have died, officials said.

A spokesperson for the Koblenz police told Reuters that an unclear number of people needed to be rescued from roofs.
...
The full extent of the damage in the region was still unclear after many villages were cut off by floodwater and landslides that made roads impassable. Videos posted on social media showed cars floating down streets and houses partly collapsed in some places.

(36,099 posts)Now that it's happened both in winter and summer, preventive spending on flood mitigation infrastructure will perhaps affect the EU summer vacation this year.
Good thing global leaders agreed to tax international companies at 15%; that will be just the beginning of climate mitigation costs.
Wishing for a solid recovery for Germany.

(8,287 posts)In Switzerland, it has been raining for 2 months straight. Weve had a rainy, stormy, summer since early May. The temp right now is 66 and we havent seen the sun since Friday. Starting Sunday a change in the forecast will bring warmth and clear skies. But the low front over Central Europe sticks around until Saturday.
Those poor people. 6 homes collapsed! These are buildings that can withstand earthquakes! Scary!

(14,627 posts)Although we get a lot of rain annually, we're already on track to set records for rainfall amounts this year.
And last winter we had an unusually long spell of below-freezing weather. We can usually keep some annuals planted in the ground year-round. Maybe every 2 or 3 years we have a slightly hard winter, but covering the annuals usually protects them during our normal short cold spells. I lost of lot of in-ground plants last winter due to below-freezing weather for days at a time.
But climate change is a hoax!
I have a garden but I have no idea what will happen when the rains stop. Ill have to hand water and we both know thats not going to be good.

(6,537 posts)That's what we need. Snowpacks feed the rivers and tributaries as they melt in the Spring and Summer, and that keeps us going. So, when all we get is rain instead of snow, the water cycle is disrupted, and it leads to drought.
Each area has its own story as to snowpack, but overall snowpacks are generally down about 10%. Not good.

We haven't heard anything drastic about our house yet, but we're getting nervous.

(101,322 posts)At least six others have died in neighbouring Belgium, and the city of Liège has urged all residents to leave.
It follows record rainfall in parts of western Europe that has caused major rivers to burst their banks.
The Netherlands has also been badly hit, with flooding rivers damaging many houses in the southern province of Limburg. A number of care homes have also had to be evacuated.

(790 posts)I don't recall ever seeing such devastation in these areas. I hadn't known about the incessant downpours. It seems as if any restraints have just given away under pressure. Cars tossed about, homes unearthed. Worst of all the untold numbers of people missing. In one picture of an abandoned home, you can see the high water line was practically to the roof.

(101,322 posts)Officials warned the figures could rise further. About 1,300 people in the devastated Ahrweiler district of Rhineland-Palatinate remain unaccounted for, although efforts to contact them were being hindered by badly damaged phone networks.
The regional interior minister, Roger Lewentz, told broadcaster SWR that 40, 50 or 60 people could be missing. When you havent heard for people for such a long time you have to fear the worst. The number of victims will likely keep rising.
Belgian authorities said the countrys death toll had risen to 12, with five still missing. Most of the dead were found around Liège, a city of 200,000 people, despite an order for residents of central districts and areas bordering the Meuse river to evacuate.
