Pelosi defends warning from Maloney about losing House: 'Always run scared'
Source: The Hill
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday defended the head of the Democrats' campaign arm for warning that the party risks losing the House without a sharp change in message.
The speaker said the pessimistic outlook, voiced recently by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), was merely an energizing tactic, while predicting that Democrats will keep the gavel in next year's midterm elections.
"You always have to run from behind," Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol. "In terms of the specific, where he was zeroing in on: always run scared."
The remarks came two days after a Politico report revealed that Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), had recently warned vulnerable Democrats that if the elections were staged today, Republicans would win back the lower chamber.

(10,303 posts)2010 the GQP took control of the House. In 2018 we took control of the House. If history is any indication of where things could be, we are staring at a Speaker McCarthy.
I think Biden knows this all too well and is doing what he can to ensure that his part of US government is outperforming expectations and that the US public will want to return Democrats to power in the legislative branch too.
Yes, we are battling from behind. Pelosi is correct.

(3,169 posts)But there HAVE been exceptions - 1998, 2002. Always repeating the party in power loses seats in the midterms leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Every fundraising email that I get is always full of the same hair-on-fire appeals. Im not sure that kind of stuff works anymore.
Midterm elections are base elections. The party that turns out its own voters is the party that will win.

(13,059 posts)Both of those elections were debacles for the Democrats. We do not want to repeat that.

(3,169 posts)But, I dont see 2022 being like either one of those years.
In 1994, Democrats were asleep at the wheel, complacent because theyd controlled the House for 40 years at that point. Gingrich ushered in the era of personal, vindictive politics.
In 2010, Democrats were again caught flatfooted by the Tea Party and the emergence of the racists from under their rocks.
Democrats seem to be doing better this time around. They are not taking anything for granted and are actually talking about their successes. Plus, we are still fighting off Trump.

You know after the Senators made their trip Moscow, it was shortly after that Putin made the statement that our system of Government was outdated and none of those Republican Senators would disagree with him....
So we need to be scared.
Through out history the thought and statements "oh that will never happen" or the guy is a radical he will never rise to power".
Well it did in the 30's with Mussolini, Hitler and I will put Trump in that class here as it happen in 2016

(6,236 posts)will be seen for the first time. repubs control many states so will be in charge of drawing the lines. Michigan has been very gerrymandered. The voters put in a commission to draw the lines. They are meeting now. We will lose a seat Folks here just want the districts to be related and fair. Fingers crossed.

(3,169 posts)Lets see - New York, California, and Illinois are likely to redraw their districts and lose 1 Republican seat each. West Virginia will definitely lose a Republican seat. Oregon and Colorado will gain likely Democratic seats. I dont know what will happen here in NC with our crazy Republican legislature. We gain a seat and will have 14, which SHOULD be split 7-7. These crazies will probably try a 10-4 map and well end up in court again.
Montana gains a seat and it could actually be a Dem pickup. Texas and Florida worry me.

(10,157 posts)Republicans could run an armadillo in my district and it would win. The incumbent is a troglodyte who does nothing for anyone, yet he easily wins reelection.
