No, a vaccine doesn't make you 'Superman.' Breakthrough COVID-19 cases are increasing amid delta var

From the earliest days of the pandemic, public health officials told Americans vaccination was the way back to normal life, but the path forward has become less clear. While COVID-19 vaccines were delivered in record time, the promise of vaccine salvation was upended by entrenched hesitancy, waning immunity and a wildly contagious mutation of the enigmatic virus that causes the disease.
Three studies released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention underscore the new reality: Breakthrough infections are occurring more frequently than previously reported.
Recent data makes clear that protection against mild and moderate disease has decreased over time, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said during a Wednesday briefing. This is likely due to both waning immunity and the strength of the widespread delta variant.

(17,968 posts)Vaccines work well long term only if a critical mass is vaccinated. Otherwise, it's like flu season. Revaxxed every year.

(12,029 posts)My son was just at a wedding that resulted in breakthrough infections. People diagnosed themselves using drugstore Covid tests -- and I doubt anyone bothered to report their cases to local health departments because their symptoms were mild.

(32,767 posts)The bad thing is that the vaccinated people can still pass Covid germs and infect others. It's is the main reason why masks are still necessary.
Even more necessary now, because so many of us ARE vaccinated and therefore candidates for symptomless Covid. I hope your son stays healthy.

(2,198 posts)In May, fewer than 5% of cases were among vaccinated individuals. And, in July, now that the deltas strain is the overwhelmingly dominant, virus in the community, now 20% of cases in July were among vaccinated people, said Dr. Chris Spitters, director of the Snohomish County Health District.

Ready for that booster Pfizer shot later this year.

I am thankful to be alive and more or less well, but would hate like hell to have experienced the non-vaccinated version.

(13,059 posts)We have always known that there would be breakthrough infections but vaccinated people are much less likely to get really sick or die, even with the Delta variant.

(5,436 posts)If you have been vaccinated against it, you can still catch it and pass it on.
Difference is, vaccinated you will feel poorly for a week at the most, the unvaccinated person you pass it on to will be a lot worse off.
Annual vaccinations against the flu are a normality, booster shots against COVID delta will become normal too.
If I remember my Biology correctly, a pregnant woman passes antibodies to her unborn child across the placenta, and in breast milk after birth.
So being vaccinated against both the flu and delta is especially important for mothers to be. Despite what disruptive murderous media will tell you.
I guess the writing is on the wall for the unvaccinated (*). Get with the program, or get really sick!
(*) Sympathy for those who can't be vaccinated.
