Berlin: The Taliban will continue to allow Afghans who have the right documents to leave Afghanistan after the United States' withdrawal deadline on August 31, Germany's ambassador to Afghanistan said Wednesday.
Markus Potzel said on Twitter he had met with Taliban deputy chief negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, who had "assured me that Afghans with legal documents will continue to have the opportunity to travel on commercial flights after 31 August".

(2,609 posts)We still have a lot of pull with the purse strings. We will get the Americans who want to leave out by next week. Some Afghan allies who want to leave are going to be left behind, we will continue to negotiate their leaving after our troops have left. How compliant the Taliban is will determine how good of a change they have to maintain a functioning government.
We also have high value prisoners to exchange.

(9,753 posts)They are clearly tainted with westernism and don't want to be ruled by Sharia law.
Better to let them go: otherwise you'll have to kill them all, and their families.
Not good for civilian morale, especially if you're trying to knit a fragmented nation together.

(19,114 posts)Everything they are doing seems to indicate that the Taliban actually wants to control a functioning government, they realize their control won't be long if it isn't functioning.
So they want government workers and skilled people to stay. Going to be a tight rope for both sides.

(22,805 posts)Force them to "run the country" at gunpoint?
The Taliban have caught a tiger by the tail, if you ask me.

(19,114 posts)They're already telling them to go to work.
How they handle women is going to be interesting, they've indicated they want them to work, but right now have said stay home because the rank and file members of the Taliban aren't all on board with that yet. And that's the trick, the Taliban aren't going to have control over some regions whose warlords might have different ideas.

(22,805 posts)I don't even think "troops" is the correct terminology for the rag tag bunch we are seeing right now.
Maybe they are saving the "good stuff" for a special occasion, like you would chocolate or wine or a fancy new dress.

With the Afghan people gone & the billion$ now in untouchable accts outside Taliban control, what is left?
A big plot of dirt & far bigger, meaner Powers than the mealey-mouthed Taliban, just waiting for their share of the Afghanistan pie.

(22,805 posts)Reminds me of the saying...
Failure to plan on your part, doesn't constitute an emergency on my part.
I am wondering how realistic the Tban is about what it will take to run a country. I don't see any binders full of policy and instructions. I doubt that they have any coherent plans for anything.
It's like suddenly the junior high student government is in charge of the gun cabinet.

(10,078 posts)The Taliban seem to be clever with their wording. Women and girls will have freedom and rights under shariah law (but the Taliban makes up the law according to their extremist views). The Taliban will allow Afghans with the right documents to leave Afghanistanbut they get to decide whether documents are right. I truly hope Im wrong, and this Taliban is not as vicious as the one 20 years ago.

(6,569 posts)They think we are really stupid and will believe whatever we are told. If they want women to work, it's because they need slaves. They didn't suddenly become ultra hip, modern businessmen. They understand cash, however, and some probably changed hands. I'll believe it when I see it, too.

Afghanistan is believed to be sitting on one of the richest troves of minerals in the world. The value of these resources has been roughly estimated between $1-3 trillion.
Afghanistan has vast reserves of gold, platinum, silver, copper, iron, chromite, lithium, uranium, and aluminium. The countrys high-quality emeralds, rubies, sapphires, turquoise, and lapis lazuli have long charmed the gemstone market. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), through its extensive scientific research of minerals, concluded that Afghanistan may hold 60 million metric tons of copper, 2.2 billion tons of iron ore, 1.4 million tons of rare earth elements (REEs) such as lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and veins of aluminium, gold, silver, zinc, mercury, and lithium. According to Pentagon officials, their initial analysis at one location in Ghazni province showed the potential for lithium deposits as large as those of Bolivia, which has the worlds largest known lithium reserves. The USGS estimates the Khanneshin deposits in Helmand province will yield 1.1.-1.4 million metric tons of REEs. Some reports estimate Afghanistan REE resources are among the largest on earth. snip...
