Another record for US job openings; 10.9 million in July

Source: AP

By PAUL WISEMAN

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers posted a record job openings for the second consecutive month in July — more affirmation that the labor market is bouncing back from last year’s coronavirus recession.

Job openings rose to 10.9 million in July, up from the previous record of 10.2 million in June, the Labor Department reported Wednesday.

But the department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report showed that actual hiring dipped slightly to 6.7 million in July, from 6.8 million in June. Layoffs rose slightly to 1.3 million.

Nearly 4 million people quit their jobs, just shy of a record set in April, and up from 3.9 million in June. That suggests many Americans are confident enough in their prospects to seek something new.

A "NOW HIRING" sign is posted in the window of The Wharf Chocolate Factory at Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, Calif., Friday, Aug. 6, 2021. California employers are adding new jobs at a record-breaking pace even as the state's unemployment claims remain stubbornly high, a sign the delta variant could be giving people pause about returning to work. ...are leaving for higher wages, but people who were sidelined are not re-entering the workforce at those low wage openings.

lower wages jobs often don't have health insurance, retirement, or even predictable income amounts if it's hourly

We mainly stayed in or around the rental. But I did go into an open-air market. The clerk was telling a customer that they haven't closed a day during the season, but they are down 29 employees, so they close 1 day a week so everyone can get some rest. The customer said the hospitality industry is the same.

My older sister, in her 70's, is going to look for work. She 'retired' last spring. Her boyfriend had a medical problem right after, so she didn't get much of a break. She got some unemployment benefits and the stimulus payments and now the repressive gov. of Ohio wants her to prove she qualified for the money she got.

She is legally disabled and qualifies for Medicaid. She works to prove she can (I guess) and there should be no question she qualified for any money she got, ever.

folks will start going back to the lower wage jobs. While those jobs have been paying more lately look for them to drop their starting pay with the increase in job seakers.
