EAST HARTFORD U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in East Hartford to mark the enhanced federal child tax credit now being paid with the goal of lifting families out of poverty, said Wednesday she wants to make the enhanced benefit permanent.
The goal of the rescue package was to put vaccines in peoples arms [and] money in peoples pockets,' the Democrat told reporters outside Goodwin University.
Pelosi and others cited the case of Carmen Rodriguez, a Hartford grandmother of nine who spoke at the press conference, along with top Democratic officials. Pelosi -- who noted she also has none grandchildren -- made her pitch for the credit and the federal coronavirus stimulus plan in the hometown of U.S. Rep. John B. Larson, a close political ally for the past two decades.
With this money, we can educate our kids and catch them up,' said Rodriguez, citing the lost time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rodriguez said she is caring for the children of her son, who died in 2020, along with several other grandchildren.

(43,252 posts)The more they expand benefits permanently, the more of a corner Republicans will be in at election time or the more unpopular things Republicans will do when in power - cutting benefits, which will cause voters to kick them out! Hope their reforms to SS and Medicare are substantive.

(10,720 posts)half of it through the Great Recession. There wasn't much help, a little bit from tax credits, but this was before Obamacare and we mostly had nothing. The kids avoided sports all through school knowing that one injury and we'd be done. Keeping the house (which we did) was a big struggle.
Anyway, some people who went through that might think "I didn't get a break, why should they?"
Other people, myself included, are just glad that somebody seems to care finally, and things can be a little easier (at least on one front) for a newer generation.
