JERUSALEM (AP) At least four Palestinian gunmen were killed in shootouts with Israeli security forces during a sweeping West Bank arrest operation cracking down on the Islamic militant group Hamas on Sunday, the Israeli military said.
It was the deadliest violence between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants in the occupied West Bank in recent weeks and came amid heightened tensions following this years 11-day war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said a Palestinian was shot dead near the northern West Bank city of Jenin and three others were killed in Biddu, north of Jerusalem. The Israeli military said an officer and soldier suffered serious injuries during the arrest in Burqin, near Jenin, and were airlifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a statement that Israeli security forces in the West Bank moved against Hamas operatives that were about to execute terror attacks in the very immediate future.

(2,728 posts)According to both Israeli government and Hamas press statements.
Hamas states in a press release today "...mourns the Palestinian martyrs who were killed by the occupation while defending the occupied cities of Jerusalem and Jenin."
Defending as in armed and engaged in combat with the Israeli Defense Forces.
If Hamas has no problem acknowledging the "martyrdom" of their fighters in combat with the IDF why should anyone else?

(1,388 posts)250 Israelis have died and 5600 were injured. This is despite having the Iron Dome missile interception system and the most modern military in the Middle East.
5,600 Palestinians have died and 115,000 have been injured during that same period.

(302 posts)I think I have the answer to the conflict. Lets do a swap, move the state of Texas to where Israel sits and Israel to where it sits. I would love to have Israel as a close neighbor and I think the strong willed and independent people of Texas will do just fine.
