China says it carried out beach landing drills in province opposite Taiwan
Source: Reuters
BEIJING, Oct 11 (Reuters) - China's military said on Monday it had carried out beach landing and assault drills in the province directly across the sea from Taiwan, though it did not link the exercises to current tensions with Taipei.
Democratically ruled Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, has complained of stepped-up military and political pressure from Beijing to force it to accept Chinese rule, including massed air force incursions into Taiwan's air defence identification zone. read more
The official People's Liberation Army Daily newspaper, in a brief report on its Weibo microblogging account, said the drills had been carried out "in recent days" in the southern part of Fujian province.
The action had involved "shock" troops, sappers and boat specialists, the Chinese military newspaper added. The troops were "divided into multiple waves to grab the beach and perform combat tasks at different stages", it added, without providing further details.

Do you ever feel we are being slow walked to global war?

(5,688 posts)Their roar is worse than its bite and they know how much they will lose trying to take Taiwan.
This is normal for most political clowns. Chinas economy is right now in the trash, so XJP is ramping up xenophobia, jingoism, and militarism as a distraction.

(2,992 posts)You're probably right, but the PRC's army is larger than ours, its navy has more ships than ours (and it includes a couple of aircraft carriers), and although it's fleet of front-line fighter aircraft is smaller than ours, it includes modern equipment that, for some metrics, outperforms ours. Without the protection of allies, Taiwan would be overrun very quickly.
Part of me worries that the PRC is thinking of taking advantage of what they view as a weak US. From their perspective, they've seen the US withdraw from Afghanistan without success. They see a population so divided that large numbers here might oppose any sort of military action, no matter how justified, just because Biden is president. They also know our economy hasn't recovered from the pandemic.
I'm not expressing things that are - only things as they might be perceived in Beijing. These perceptions might lead some analysts over there that the US would be unwilling or unable (or both) to intervene.
I really, really hope I'm wrong here.

(62,521 posts)I have a friend who works someplace that told me that.
he also went on to say, that the military is very aware of that and has been training extensively for many many years countering our own tech.
china has large numbers on paper but they can ill afford a major war.
while you think china "can squash Taiwan like a bug", some bugs are tougher than others and will far be from a cake walk than you think.
our military has been over there for years, not just this past year. and they have been teaching them exactly what I have mentioned above.

(5,688 posts)Trust me when I tell you they are nothing but blowhard, like their toothless mutt North Korea.
They make a motion towards Taiwan and at least four nations will instantly jump in. They have no first strike capability. We do. They have one deep blue fleet. We have twelve. Their missiles are mid-range. Ours are ICBMs.
Japan will jump in, South Korea will jump in, Britain will jump in, the US will jump in
XJP thinks because he can bully smaller nations into doing what he wants due to their economic might (which is now on rapid decline), he can do it in the Big Leagues. Japan thought that too in the 1930s and 1940s.

(2,728 posts)They will be the biggest losers. In the mean time the belligerent actions by the Chinese gov as mentioned in the OP make it easier to treat them as the enemy they are. More motivation to decouple our dependent relationship on them.

(839 posts)it works better as a deterant like how NK is using it.
i know they had a secret program a while ago, I do not think it continued after the various elections that change the party a few times.
now they did reveal a few days ago the existense of mid-range air-to-air that could hit various strategic target in mainland. this is a good thing but some people wanted to use it on the three gorge's dam (this would inflict a massive civilian casualty). which i do not think is a good idea unless China uses nuke.

(36,745 posts)The CCP had better think long and hard with something like that dam just sitting there.
Good point on your part.

(714 posts)If the Chinese want the drills to be realistic, they should let US planes fly overhead and bomb the crap out of anything that moves.
Remember that old football axiom: practice like you're going to play.

Love it
Though I too feel like we are being manipulated into another war. If freaking TFG hadnt - well you know
