Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is suing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as he faces a likely contempt referral for refusing to cooperate with the panel.
In a civil complaint filed Wednesday afternoon, Meadows's lawyers said that the select committee does not have the authority to issue the subpoenas directed at him and that President Biden's refusal to assert executive privilege opens constitutional questions that should be decided through legal action.
"As a result, Mr. Meadows, a witness, has been put in the untenable position of choosing between conflicting privilege claims that are of constitutional origin and dimension and having to either risk enforcement of the subpoena issued to him, not merely by the House of Representatives, but through actions by the Executive and Judicial Branches, or, alternatively, unilaterally abandoning the former presidents claims of privileges and immunities," the complaint reads. "Thus, Mr. Meadows turns to the courts to say what the law is."
Spokespersons for Pelosi and the select committee did not immediately respond when asked for comment.

(130,597 posts)Officer Kim Potter pulled out her gun instead of a taser and killed Daunte Wright.
Today, some 8 months later, her trial began.
Bannon was indicted and charged November 12, 2021 and was arrested November 15, 2021. His trial is set for guess when? Yup, 8 months from now.
The court backlog is humongous - made worse last year due to being engulfed in the throes of the pandemic, when most courts actually closed for some time until they finally started doing some "virtual" sessions and adding mitigation procedures.
This is why prosecutors and defense attorneys often try negotiating plea deals and whatnot in order to kill the trials due to these types of wait times. There are obviously many circumstances when a jury trial is necessary, but in that case, they have to wait.

(21,627 posts)He was issued a valid subpoena and ignored it. It would certainly take 8 months to adjudicate such a complicated case. I lost my sarcasm thingy.

(9,075 posts)GOP used to rail against frivolous lawsuits.
It's another delay tactic. they are learning from T****, just sue everybody and delay everything.
Judges got to start moving faster on some of this crap.

(21,627 posts)It gives one side. Reporters from the Hill should read the Constitution. It is the duty of Congress to be a check on the executive branch, as a matter of fact, the courts have no business in getting involved in this lawful subpoena. Meadow's lawyer wants the court to rule that Congress is not allowed to issue subpoenas. As soon as a federal judge gets this law suit he should dismiss it and go after the lawyer for filing a frivolous suit.
