DeSantis reappears in public for first time in two weeks after 'staying with his wife through her ca
Source: Daily Mail
To the surprise of many, Ron DeSantis has found a new calling as a breast cancer warrior. His appearances at "faith" and football events were his first public appearances since December 17- also roughly the start of the Omicron surge in Florida. He attributes his lack of visibility and accessibility during the current pandemic surge to his deep personal involvement in his wife's cancer treatment.
As DeSantis' disappearance started to become a media story, my wife said "he's going to play the cancer card." Bingo!

(17,003 posts)Radiation treatment is 30 minutes max and chemo isnt more than a day. Even a full mastectomy wouldnt require 24/7 care for two weeks. This is nothing but a lame ass attempt to distract from the fact his leadership has put Florida on the map again for its soaring Covid rates.
madville
(7,410 posts)Sure, the time of the actual cancer treatment is short, but the recovery period and side effects can last for weeks or months, sometimes for life.
We regularly have people at work that use their FMLA leave to care for a spouse or child following cancer treatment, its not an instant recovery.
Not defending Desantis, but the idea that there are no side effects or recovery needed after chemo or radiation is flawed. I hope no political opponents or anyone in the media use that argument publicly.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,375 posts)My wife had horrible after affects during her round of radiation and chemo treatments before her passing almost 4 years ago.
DeSantis is a real POS, but I will not criticize him for this, having gone through this with my late wife.

MarineCombatEngineer
(12,375 posts)She went into remission, which happens frequently, unlike my late wife, that doesn't change the fact that he was with his wife during her trying times.
As I said, I won't criticize him for taking care of his wife, I will condemn him for being a POS gov. of FL.
Unless you've been there, done that, then you have no fucking idea what the family goes through.
Phoenix61
(17,003 posts)I know exactly what a family goes through and Im so sorry for what your family went through. But again this is 3 months out from diagnosis. She wasnt so sick a week ago that DeSatan didnt have time for a two minute news release then healthy enough to show up on stage at a New Years Eve event, maskless. If she was undergoing chemo shed be wearing a mask.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,375 posts)so, once again, I won't criticize him for taking care of his wife, for being there with his wife during her trying times.
Glad you beat the big C, it's a horrible disease.
Phoenix61
(17,003 posts)Not for a split second. I think hes lying about taking care of her. From what I know of her, shes just as bad as he is. I think both will use her diagnose to their political advantage.

MarineCombatEngineer
(12,375 posts)And just what do you think his thoughts are during this trying times for his wife and his family?
Unless you've been there, done that, then you have no idea the stress it puts on him and his family.
He's a POS as a gov., but I will not condemn, nor criticize him for his care for his wife.

(2,429 posts)I had surgery and was out of work 6 weeks, then went back to work when chemo treatments started. It WAS a big deal toward the end of the treatments, though. You just get weaker and weaker and that weakness lasts probably a month or so after the last treatment. But then it takes a couple of years to get your energy back.
But DeSatan's wife could have had surgery. Also he or she could have had COVID. He's such a political stunt man, I wouldn't put it past him to make up something about his wife to get some political mileage out of it. That'd be better than admitting COVID put him down.
People are on zoom. Your right, he's lying, and someone has the goods, As Rachel, says watch this space.

(7,611 posts)Everything he has done on Covid has been to woo the support of the anti-mask, anti-vax portion of the Republican base. He has famously opposed any and all public health mandates, posing as a defender of personal choice and "freedom." He has been willing to accept higher case rates and pushed monoclonal antibody treatments as an alternative. His treatment program is turning useless as 1) supplies of the drugs are inadequate to deal with the surge, and 2) the widely used drugs that were effective against Delta appear to be far less effective against Omicron.
Prediction: DeSantis, and DeSantis through Ladapo, will blame Biden/Fauci for not instantly turning on a spigot of effective treatments.

(7,410 posts)The least vaccinated demographic group in Florida is Black people at around 40%, and they vote about 90% Democratic.
The largest block of Republican voters, older white people, is also the most vaccinated, at well over 70%.

(7,611 posts)Commenters note that it is possible that Casey DeSantis had bad side effects from whatever procedure was used to deal with her breast cancer. That's true. I also suspect that, whatever the actual circumstances, Ron DeSantis' personal attention would add nothing to the quality of the care already provided by paid medical staff which is surely available to the governor's family. Because of "privacy concerns," we will never know the actual circumstances except as they are relayed to us by the family. I'm fine with that, but I will take all such communications, especially those relayed through his office, with a grain of salt.
Ordinarily, we think of journalism as journalists reviewing a set of events and facts and using them to tell a story that hopefully engages and informs the reader. That is not what happens in the era of Fox News/Trump. The real process is- the story is selected first and then the reporter selects facts and events that support the story. In this case, the story is "Ron DeSantis is a victim." This story will be told whenever the subject of his inept response to Omicron is brought up.
For endless examples of this process, look at Fox News. Their programming has coagulated around a single theme: things that make you angry and why it's Biden's (or Fauci, or one of his other surrogate's) fault.

(4,841 posts)Without questioning the veracity of his claim, the people of Florida deserved to know why a governor who relishes the limelight suddenly disappeared during a pandemic surge. A simple statement though his representative along with a suggestion to refer all questions or concerns to his lieutenant governor would have been reassuring.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,375 posts)when my family and I went through this with my wife, and their mother, this was a very private time in our lives, we kept this on the q t, it was nobody else's business.

(7,611 posts)The family is entitled to privacy, but it sure looks like DeSantis is using it as a Get Out of Jail Free card.
My disbelief in his sincerity and veracity is unimportant. You make the valid point that he needs to be condemned for his actions as Governor of Florida. I would add, also his inactions- he is our chief executive. Now that the couple has appeared together, maskless, at public events, I think we can resume holding him accountable. His FMLA carried him through the runup of the Omicron surge, but he has emerged in time for the peak.
Let the deflection begin.

(2,343 posts)And dealing with a double mastectomy, it ain't that bad. Her words, not mine. She spent one night in the hospital. I was back to work in two days, although I had tremendous flexibility to be at home tending to her needs. Nowadays, if it's caught early, the surgery is no more worrying than a tonsillectomy.
Ms. DeSantis especially is not entitled to sympathy, much less attention.
