New York A.G. Seeks to Question Trump Children in Fraud Inquiry

Source: NY Times

Subheading: The attorney general, Letitia James, has subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump as part of a civil investigation.

Jan. 3, 2022 Updated 11:38 a.m. ET

The New York State attorney general’s office, which last month subpoenaed Donald J. Trump as part of a civil investigation into his business practices, is also seeking to question two of his adult children as part of the inquiry.

The involvement of the children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, was disclosed in a court document filed on Monday as the Trump Organization sought to block lawyers for the attorney general, Letitia James, from questioning the former president and his children.

The subpoenas for the former president and two of his children were served on Dec. 1, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. Eric Trump, another of Mr. Trump’s sons, was already questioned by Ms. James’s office in October 2020.

The attorney general’s effort to interview Mr. Trump under oath became public last month, but it was not previously known that her office, which has been conducting a civil investigation into the former president’s business practices for almost three years, was also looking to question Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump.

This will be fun to watch

New York Attorney General Letitia James has subpoenaed Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. as part of her civil tax fraud investigation into the Trump Organization, court filings made public Monday reveal.

James's office "recently" filed subpoenas seeking testimony and documents from former President Donald Trump's children "in connection with an investigation into the valuation of properties owned or controlled by Donald J. Trump or the Trump Organization,” according to a New York Supreme Court order unsealed Monday and first reported by The New York Times.

James is also seeking to depose the former president as part of the probe. Trump has called James' investigation "corrupt" and a "witch hunt." The filing shows that Trump and his children are all challenging the subpoenas.

The judge signed off on a Dec. 30 stipulation which will allow the Trumps to file a motion to quash the subpoenas and for the attorney general to respond with a timetable for the judge to review the filings.

My understanding of civil cases is they are investigated, brought forward, and funded by private individuals. Criminal cases are investigated, brought forward, and funded by the government on behalf of the people.

What am I misunderstanding here? If government resources are involved shouldn't it be a criminal case? Is James performing this investigation on her own, outside her government work?

It would be Epic Stupidity to lie in this instance.

Lying in the legal realm is perjury.

Perjury is a crime.

So for once in your Republican-values lives,
even though it will expose your other crimes,
telling the truth might be a savvy strategery.

I imagine it as a chilling final turn of the plot. His world is coming to an end. He will never have another good day. Loser label will haunt him. The law will pursue him. Mental illness will hobble him. His properties will bankrupt him.

I'm just an internet prosecutor but I bet that Tish doesn't need depositions from Ivanka, Jr., or MF45. She can win her case on paper documents, doesn't have to prove intent.

I'm thinking Trump may be out 100's of millions of dollars, not to mention some investors may want to sue him for lying about his property values.
