Covid cases rise by 948% in Florida as Omicron drives huge wave across US
Source: The Guardian
Covid-19 cases in Florida have risen by 948% in just two weeks, as the highly transmissible Omicron variant drives a huge wave of infections and hospitalizations across the US.
Even as Dr Anthony Fauci Joe Bidens top medical adviser cautioned the public to look at hospitalizations and not infections in order to gauge Omicrons severity, the seven-day average for US patients hospitalized with Covid-19 increased by more than 40% during the week between Christmas and New Years Eve.
Cases have risen by more than 100% nationally, despite tests being in short supply in many areas, and infections have doubled in the last seven days to an average of 418,000 a day, according to a Reuters tally.
In Florida, local and state officials warned that residents were waiting hours in sometimes miles-long lines just to get a test. Some accused the state health department and the governor, Ron DeSantis, of being missing in action.

(16,725 posts)It seems we have entered the "we're not going back" to any restrictions and you're all free to get infected. Good Luck. I feared this would happen.

(128,924 posts)@298, to the point where the Eagles just played an away game against the WFT yesterday and today they announced 12 Eagles are now in COVID protocol (most of them having been starters yesterday).
They are hoping to be cleared by the weekend for their last game of the season against the Cowboys.
I am surprised that PA isn't higher up on the list considering we have shot up to the 18,000 - 20,000 cases per day range the past week (NYT showing 134%).

(10,906 posts)have, as you indicated, very high new case rates, and some startling 14 day percentage increases. Thanks
You've probably heard that anti-vaxxer Vikings QB Kirk Cousins got Covid and missed the January 2 game against the Packers. That was our last slim hope of remaining in the playoffs (we needed to win that game and the last game of the regular season, plus some other team or teams had to lose, so it was a very slim chance, but now it is gone). Packers 37, Vikings 10.

(128,924 posts)(and one other game's outcome required - I think the Seahawks? ) for the Eagles to clinch a wildcard slot, which they did.
As it is, our previous game against D.C. a couple weeks ago had been delayed a couple days from a Sunday to that Tuesday due to their team having too many players in COVID protocol.
