Trump cancels Jan. 6 press conference

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 01/04/22 06:15 PM EST

Former President Trump is scrapping a planned news conference on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

The former president had planned to use the Thursday news conference at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla., as counterprogramming for a scheduled prayer service at the Capitol to commemorate the events of Jan. 6.

In a statement, Trump blamed the House select committee charged with investigating the Jan. 6 riot for the cancellation. He said he would instead touch on many of the themes he had planned to discuss at the news conference during a rally in Arizona set for Jan. 15.

And quite honestly, I'm rather surprised. I REALLY thought he'd use the moment to get one more time 'on stage.'

So, I'm somewhat convinced that SOMEONE convinced him NOT to do it - and I'd assume it was for 'legal' reasons - for instance, he'd admit or confess to yet something else for which he would be legally liable.

None the less, YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

14. Trump abruptly cancels planned Jan. 6th speech -- then throws tantrum at Capitol riot probe
Tue Jan 4, 2022, 07:42 PM
Jan 2022

Former President Donald Trump abruptly canceled his planned speech on the anniversary of the Capitol riots on January 6th.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Trump said he was cancelling the speech "in light of the total bias and dishonesty of the January 6th Unselect Committee of Democrats, two failed Republicans, and the Fake News Media."

He then went on to lob insults at members of the committee, as well as assorted political foes, including "Adam Schifty Schiff" and "Crazy Nancy Pelosi."

Trump tried to blame Pelosi for supposedly not doing enough to stop his supporters from rioting at the Capitol, and also demanded that the House Select Committee investigating said riot look into his baseless claims of voter fraud. Trump also vowed that he would relitigate these topics during an event with supporters in Arizona.

I'm actually shocked (in the best possible way) that he has canceled his Jan. 6 plans, but obviously he has.

The idea that he did this due to "advice" (legal or otherwise) is hard to swallow, though. He doesn't take advice, so unless someone figured out to disguise advice as flattery or make him think it was his own idea, there has to be another reason, imo.

If he were indeed innocent of inciting an insurrection (which he is not), then you'd think the Jan. 6 committee would give him even more motivation to hold his news conference.

I think one of his lawyers, if he still has one, finally got it through his thick, orange skull that it would behoove him to shut the hell up before he gave the Jan. 6 Committee even MORE evidence that he should go to jail for treason for the rest of his sorry-ass life.

Obviously scared to death of Garland's press conference on the same day about DOJ actions again the Jan 6th insurrectionists.

It's look hella bad for Trump to cancel his event on the same day Garland announced an investigation into Trump himself.

And it'd look worse to go ahead and hold the event then get peppered with questions about the DOJ going after him.

SO likely Trump is hunkering down trying to figure out what's going to happen.

My apologies. I thought I'd read it was on the 6th.

Regardless, Trump cancelling his event before Garland's statement is better for Trump if Garland were to have something to say which directly involves Trump.

There's still enough Trump supporters in the government that I doubt they could keep big news on that front from leaking to Trump.

So I'd guess either something leaked to Trump...or Trump is paranoid enough that he'd cancel because he doesn't trust his toadies to pass along a leak.

"and instead will discuss many of those important topics at my rally on Saturday, January 15th, in Arizona—It will be a big crowd!" Trump said in an email message. "

Whereas last year he said about his rally "will be wild," this year he simply says, "it will be a big crowd."

I'm not sure I would say with any confidence that he has learned his lesson, but the change in tone isnotable.

Well, either him or one of his cronies. Regardless, I am thinking that someone mentioned that his numbers are starting to slip among his 'supporters' and that there is a real concern that one of those unbalanced loons will try to shoot his big ole ass in retaliation for his getting them all riled up and then never delivering. Of course, that would be played by the rethugs as a leftist assassination, at least until the facts were presented. Then, as usual, they would have just gone silent and on to the next faux outrage to rile up the monster that they cannot control yet again. Lunacy. But, this is modern politics.
