Marc Elias Democracy Docket gets Ohio gerrymandering map struck down!

Ohio Legislative Redistricting Challenge (LWVO)
League of Women Voters of Ohio v. Ohio Redistricting Commission
Filed: September 23, 2021

Decided: January 12, 2022

Lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court of Ohio on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ohio (LWVO), A. Philip Randolph Institute of Ohio and several individuals challenging Ohio’s new General Assembly maps passed after the release of 2020 census data. The complaint argues that the new maps are drawn to lock in Republican veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature and are therefore a partisan gerrymander in violation of the Ohio Constitution. The suit asks the court to declare the new maps invalid and order the creation of fair maps. Oral argument for this case and two related cases was held on Dec. 8.
The Ohio Supreme Court struck down the maps, holding that they were partisan gerrymanders that violated the Ohio Constitution. The court ordered the Commission to adopt new plans that comply with the constitution within 10 days of the ruling.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The League of Women Voters of Ohio, the A. Philip Randolph Institute and several individuals filed a lawsuit in partnership with the ACLU of Ohio, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Covington & Burling LLP challenging Senate Bill 258, which establishes new congressional districts for Ohio, giving Republicans an unconstitutional partisan advantage. This proposal was signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine on November 20. ...

This is the second Ohio redistricting lawsuit filed this year by the ACLU and plaintiffs - the first was brought in September, to challenge the state House and Senate Districts, which are also severely gerrymandered. Oral arguments in that case are set for December 8.

Marc Elias is founder and is the attorney that 164 out of 65 cases in which Donald Trump got his ass thrown out of court trying to overturn the election. Who could’ve ever imagined will be in this mess. Thank God for citizens who step up like Marcus and like you!

We need a tremendous effort by all of us to overcome the huge war chest the repugs can dip into anytime to help kill Democracy. We simply cannot be the last generation to enjoy free and fair elections in this country.

lwv.org. The national provides great support to the state leagues and both provide support to the local leagues. Like other nonprofits, their ability to do fundraisers has taken a big hit since COVID.

I'm a board member of a county League in Texas and ours certainly has.

Before I got on the board I had no idea what warriors League members are. Our league took on the county government and got them to expand voting hours for students. The state league here got Texas to finally implement online voter registration renewal (they'd fought against the Motor Voter Act) and to roll back purges of voter rolls before the 2020 election. Active League members work their tails off.

The r's running Ohio into the ground don't give a rap about anything but shoving their agenda through. Ohio State Supreme Court ruled years ago that the way we fund our public schools in unconstitutional. Nothing has changed.

The proceeds from lottery sales was supposed to fund schools. That ass kasich took profits made after the law and above the profit at the time the law was made and put it in the rainy day fund. He looked so good having a robust emergency for the state. Too bad he robbed public schools to do it. He also used state funds to beef up seciruity in his private home and pay State Troopers to guard him. There was a perfectly secure state home he was supposed to move to, but not good enough for him.

dewine is more interested in burying fetal remains and outlawing abortions than he is about humans who live and breathe. He can't even order a mask mandate and enforce it.

The older I get the redder Ohio gets. And the worse it gets to live here.
