Voice of Charlie Brown Dies by Suicide at 65
Source: The daily beast
The actor who voiced the cartoon version of Charlie Brown in the 1960s has died, his family announced Tuesday. Peter Robbins was 65, and his family said the cause of death was suicide. Robbins began his work as Charlie Brown as a child in 1963, and he would go on to get a tattoo of the character as well one as of Snoopy as tributes to the comic strip characters created by Charles Schulz.

His voice will live forever with that character. I hope he has finally found some peace. R.I.P.

(10,196 posts)But it sure seems a lot more common these days, Certain occupations and young people have increased a lot. I grew up in a rather small school district. approximately 125 in a graduating class. In the entire time I was there I only heard of one attempted suicide. I think it is way more common for kids these days.

(1,349 posts)With regard to young people feeling down to that extent, I always think of two things:
1) Bullying
People have been bullied forever. It's wrong. But when I was in school in the 90's there was no internet, social media, etc... You can't get away from it when you leave school like you could when I was young.
2) Being Overwhelmed
Life was simpler for my parents generation (born in the 40's). There weren't as many choices. Not that people were in love with the idea of working at a factory (around here it was John Deere) for 25 years. Maybe they weren't deliriously happy at work. But it was simple. The man would go to work out of school (some dropped out of school to work)...work for 25-30 years...retire. They made good $$. They had good benefits. They have good retirements.
No TV with 40 million channels. No internet. No cell phones. Simple.
Now kids have SO many more choices. I think there's a lot pressure in that. It's better in a way because you have more of an ability to go find what makes you happy. It's worse in a way because it's not simple. There's not one direction. It's harder to get by because it's not easy to go get a job that pays well and has good benefits in the way it was "back then."

(9,988 posts)It used to be kept very quiet because it was thought to be shameful (still is, more than it should be). I think a lot of deaths that were really suicides were passed off as something else, like accidents.
"Kids these days" doesn't seem really relevant though when we're talking about the suicide of a 65-year-old man.
It's hard to say whether suicide is really more common now, or just less covered up.

Im so sorry that this was his solution. We need to continue to keep mental health discussions ongoing and prioritized as a part of overall health. Im reading way too many of these stories.

(6,129 posts)Robbins, who had bipolar disorder, told Fox 5 San Diego in 2019 after completing a prison sentence for making criminal threats, that I would recommend to anybody that has bipolar disorder to take it seriously because your life can turn around in the span of a month like it did to me. I came out of prison and Im a better person for it. Im much more humble and grateful and thankful that I lived through the experience.

(83 posts)As someone who has survived multiple suicide attempts, I understand his pain. It's only through medication and therapy that I haven't had an attempt in 12 years. It's an ongoing struggle. One I've been battling my entire adult life.
It says on Wikipedia that he suffered from both bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia. Both are difficult to treat effectively. It appears he was turning his life around. But, the beasts never really go away.
Again, my thoughts go out to his family.
