Russian military threatens Ukraine nuclear power plant
Source: The Hill
The Russian military is threatening a nuclear power plant in Ukraine amid the ongoing invasion in the country.
Russia's military presence has increased near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which resides in a town in the Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine's ministry of internal affairs has reported.
Russian forces have aimed one of their deadliest weapons, a multiple rocket launcher called "Grad," at the nuclear power plant, according to the ministry.
Ukraine has already reached out to the international community about the danger while the ministry of internal affairs says the Ukrainian military is heading to the region to defend the plant.

(8,060 posts)It definitely sucks.
I'm guessing they want the power plant to supply Crimea.
Now, whatever you think of war-fog, there's this:
https://www.ukrinform.ua/rubric-kyiv/3414301-u-kievi-rosijski-snaradi-vlucili-u-punkt-zahoronenna-radioaktivnih-vidhodiv.html
"Наразі відсутня можливість оцінки масштабу руйнувань. Автоматизована система радіаційного моніторингу вийшла з ладу. Але камери спостережень зафіксували падіння снарядів. Оцінка радіаційної обстановки буде здійснена переносними приладами після завершення обстрілів", - наголошується у повідомленні.
Now, I haven't thought about Ukrainian since the Maidan protests and invasion in '14-'15, but here goes:'
"Currently unable to evaluate scale of destruction. Automated radiation monitoring systems out of order. Monitoring cameras observed a shell impact. Evaulation of the situation re: radiation will be done using portable devices after conclusion of shelling," per the report."
On edit: "by "here goes" I meant "here's my attempt at an attempt with vague-ish pretentions to accuracy." Ukrainian, not my Slavist-grad-school-required 3 languages. Russian, required; I claim Czech and Serbian as #2 and #3. (with Polish as #4.)

(10,053 posts)Is this threat enough to send NATO forces to push the Russians back and to take the rocket launcher out? That is truly frightening. The oligarchs closest to Putin need to stop him. He does seem determined to start WWIII.

(21,572 posts)since the fallout is likely to reach western Russia?
Russia, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Baltic countries all had nuclear fallout from Chernobyl.
But, if Russia does that, then it looks to me like a no holds barred retaliation is likely - a major escalation.
EDIT TO ADD: If that happens, the US and Canada will need to send safe food shipments to all affected countries - water, milk, vegetables, meat, flour and bread.

Sounds like a truly barbaric strategy to me.

(34,072 posts)After Ukraine gained its independence following the fall of the Soviet Union, it inherited one of the biggest nuclear arsenals in the world.
However, Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal after signing a treaty with Russia and the United States. In exchange for relinquishing its nuclear arsenal, security assurances were given by the U.S., U.K. and Russia that Ukraine would not be attacked.

(22,128 posts)With Ukraine to guarantee their security against attack, if Ukraine gave up its nukes. The U.S. and UK signed the same agreement. So.... Aren't we breaking that treaty as well by not defending them?
