(20,759 posts)If they're trying to hold a hostile occupied city, they better be prepared for a bottomless pit sucking in personnel, resources, etc.
And a constantly-escalating propaganda nightmare degrading their effectiveness.

Or throw them into a concentration camp.
The Nazis were able to hold quite a bit of captured territory that way.

1 min read
On March 4, martial law may be introduced in the Russian Federation, adviser to the President's Office head Mykhailo Podoliak believes.
"On March 4, both chambers of the Russian parliament will convene for an emergency extraordinary session. As I understand it, the preventive imposition of martial law in Russia is on the agenda. With a total ban on all rallies, disconnection from the outside world, large-scale food and financial restrictions. The evacuation of those who can afford it is now beginning across the country," he said on Twitter.

Mikhail Podolyak, who is the adviser to the President of Ukraine stated that he would not rule out the possibility of martial law being imposed in Russia. He shared a tweet earlier today, March 2, stating that both chambers of the Russian Parliament will meet in an emergency session on March 4, Friday. He further said that as far as he can tell, the possibility of martial law in Russia is on the table.
Earlier, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed martial law and accused Russia of acting like "Nazi Germany," after Russia's President Vladimir Putin began an invasion of Ukraine last week on February 24. Before that, President Zelenskyy declared a state of emergency, allowing authorities to restrict mobility, halt gatherings, and prohibit political parties and organisations in the interests of national security and public order.

(35,300 posts)The difference being that Ukr is partially occupied by hostile haters, much of the rest of it under attack by haters.
None of Russia is being assaulted--except by facts--and none of it occupied.
In one case, martial law because of extreme circumstances. In the other, by fear of truth and of the government by the populace. In the first case, it's to defend liberty against an enemy oppressor; in the other, in the service of oppression by an oppressor.
