At the beginning of the COVID supply shortages, many years ago:-
me: No dear we don't need any more toilet paper!
wife, in a panic: But there is a shortage! Go buy some!
me: yes dear.
Result: At last count, we currently have a stockpile sufficient for the next year. At least.

(10,196 posts)In modern times its impossible to control all information a population will see. Maybe many of them are still believing the party line, but everyone will at least be hearing rumors. Then whe things start happening that affect their personal lives theyll start questioning the official sources of info (propaganda). Im sure the old timers remember how it used to be in the Soviet Union. They will be more likely than younger people to start getting suspicious. The ones who have up to this point accepted what Putin has been telling them. Recently polls showed 70% of people interviewed were believing Putins story, I suspect that already changing.

(13,435 posts)Or it may make the Russian citizens amenable to whatever actions Putin says are necessary to strike back at those responsible. No way of knowing how this is going to go; sounds like a lot of Mission Accomplished banners flying.

(3,396 posts)Regardless of who is conducting the polls, those polled might be concerned that it would get back to their government, however anonymous the polling might seem. The actual number may be lower.

The wealthy like Putin will use their resources to buy those peoples assets such as homes at dirt cheap prices and then make off like bandits once the economy eventually rebounds.

(2,475 posts)As I've read through various messages over the past few days, it's disturbing to see people getting jacked up about the suffering your average Russian citizen is about to experience. It seems easy for people to display this indifference, yet the only difference between many of them and many of us is that they were unfortunate enough to be born there.

Putin, and this campaign, are wildly popular among Russians.
Look, these Russians live in Australia, with full access to western media:

Suffering is suffering and when you have no control over your leaders, it has no end.
To say the war is "wildly" popular is only your opinion.
