I guess releasing them proves they are alive and did not sacrifice themselves that day.

This might remove some of the power over the initial reports they were killed, the subsequent reports that they might be alive, and now the proof that they are alive.

Since appears that putin is trying to be the next stalin, he will send those soldiers to a prison so as not to allow them to tell the truth to anyone at all other than fellow prisoners
