Gov. Greg Abbott says Texas will send migrants to Washington DC on charter buses.

Source: KSAT-12 (local news source)

Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday that Texas will provide charter buses to border communities so migrants can be sent to Washington, D.C., where the Biden administration can better deal with them.

"To help local officials whose communities are being overwhelmed by hordes of illegal immigrants who are being dropped off by the Biden administration, Texas is providing charter buses to send these illegal immigrants who have been dropped off by the Biden administration to Washington D.C.," Abbott said."We are sending them to the United States Capitol where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border."

Which states depend the most on FEMA aid

Across the United States, including Washington, D.C., and outer territories, FEMA has allocated about $45.5 billion since 2017 for various forms of disaster relief, excluding COVID-19. During this time, Texas has received the most money from FEMA, totaling more than $7.6 billion in federal aid and spending more than $6.2 billion.

Along with Texas, the states most likely to get FEMA money are most likely to be affected by strong disasters, such as Florida, California and North Carolina. These states all received more than $1 billion in federal aid in the last three years. Moreover, each of these states besides North Carolina spent about 80% of its funds.

Of course, we (Democrats) won't point things like this out to our friends in Texas. That just wouldn't be fair.

Abbot likes citizens who believe that the right to bear arms supersedes the right to exist, if I'm not mistaken, so maybe for every bus that shows up we send back a busload of paroled felons with histories that intersect with bearing arms. Maybe, internally to Texas, Abbot will waive the condition of parole that disallows gun ownership. He can parrot the "polite society" line and predict that re-arming people with violent histories using firearms will lead to less crime and zero gun deaths.

I'm hoping Beto can get his campaign over the hump this time. Texas deserves better.

46. Gov. Greg Abbott's plan to bus migrants to Washington, D.C., will be voluntary
Wed Apr 6, 2022, 11:00 PM
Apr 2022

This is a stunt https://www.texastribune.org/2022/04/06/greg-abbott-texas-border-title-42/

But soon after the press conference, Abbott's office released more details about the plan that struck a notably softer tone.

The governor's office clarified that the program is completely voluntary for migrants and would happen only after they had been processed and released by the Department of Homeland Security. And in addition to buses, Abbott also ordered the state to charter flights to transport migrants to the nation's capital. The migrants would have to show documentation that they had already been processed by DHS. Many immigration advocates have noted that providing transportation services for asylum-seekers to reach their final destination is something the state should invest in.

Abbott's announcement led to immediate criticism from both his left and his right. Immigration rights groups said his rhetoric was still dangerous.

"Any forcible busing of migrants across the country would be outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional," Kate Huddleston, a staff attorney at ACLU of Texas, said in a statement. "Given that Abbott cannot dictate where people are sent, he has already backpedaled on this heinous plan, announcing that it will be only voluntary."

2% points, well within the margin of error. He's got a great chance of winning. He was really effective in getting out the vote in 2018, just not enough to beat the despicable Cruz.

He's been active in his last four years, working for both Texas as well as national Democrats.
He's built up a lot of good will, not to mention a lot of name recognition.

He's charismatic, progressive, and physically very attractive. That shouldn't count but it certainly helps.
Sam Bee had me in stitches in 2018 over her Beto/Cruz skits. As Abbott is a paraplegic and not as nationally detested as Cruz she may not be as hard and heavy on Abbott as Cruz.

Anyway Beto/AOC 2028 or AOC/Beto in 2028 would be fine with me. Or Katie Price. Or a number of others. We have a deep bench.

And I'll have to say I'm really disappointed in what Texas has become as well. Fifth generation Texan here.
Great great grandfather broke a friend of his out of jail in Georgia not long after the Civil War ended and made it to Texas one step ahead of the law. That's about a badge of honor for a Texan.

Greg lied about his program. It is voluntary

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/texas/article/Gov-Abbott-s-threat-to-bus-migrants-to-17064833.php?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=twitter.com

When Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday that Texas would transport apprehended migrants to Washington, D.C., he left the impression that people would be forcibly shipped off to the U.S. Capitol as soon as they crossed the border illegally and were rounded up by state authorities.

But a few hours after Abbott rolled out the plan at a press conference, the governor's office revealed several new details that painted a much different picture. In a news release, Abbott's office clarified that Texas would only transport migrants to Washington — and other destinations outside the state — if they wanted to go there and had already been processed and released by federal authorities.

Asked Thursday by Fox News host Dana Perino about the plan, Abbott said forced bus trips would run afoul of the law.

“Dana, if I were to go to Washington, D.C. and put you on a bus and take you down to the Rio Grande Valley, that would be kidnapping,” Abbott said. “Same thing applies to anybody who refuses to get onto a bus. That would be kidnapping, even though it would be by a law enforcement agency. So, there are laws that have to be followed in this process.”
