Washington Post columnist arrested in Moscow after criticizing Putin
Source: Washington Post
Russian authorities on Monday arrested Vladimir Kara-Murza a prominent Kremlin critic and politician who has written columns for The Washington Post protesting Russias war in Ukraine and violations of human rights.
Kara-Murza was arrested outside his home in Moscow, the same day CNN aired an interview in which he predicted that Russias invasion of Ukraine would lead to the downfall of President Vladimir Putins government.
Kara-Murza is a longtime Putin critic who has survived two poisonings that he said were orchestrated by the Kremlin in retaliation for his comments.
His wife, Evgenia Kara-Murza, confirmed his arrest in a tweet late Monday. Twice have the Russian authorities tried to kill my husband for advocating for sanctions against thieves and murderers, and now they want to throw him in prison for calling their bloody war a WAR, she wrote. I demand my husbands immediate release.

(6,562 posts)When a reporter asked Jen about her, she said that the State Department likes to keep quiet about people they are actively advocating for, and that their efforts were being kept quiet. Griner had her trial postponed until May. So, I think that something is going on behind closed doors, and I am praying for her and her family. Maybe she can be included in a prisoner exchange. Ukraine caught that high level guy in the last few days; maybe something can be done.

(6,562 posts)I think it was what was first reported. I don't think she had a hard narcotic in her luggage. I think that it is what they want it to be. I feel really bad for her. She was just going to play in some off league in Russia during some break she had. Nothing wrong with that. That was back before Russia went berserk. Certainly the plans for the invasion were underway at that point. I think that she is a hostage.
If she could be traded in a prisoner exchange, then I think it could be done. But, she probably counts for more than any of their soldiers (because they don't appear to care much about their soldiers, except there was a prisoner exchange once.) Or, one of these high level leaders that are traipsing into Moscow to talk to Putin might ask for her. I know I would! We have to let the State Department work it for her.
Just keep praying for peace. I guess that friend of Putin's has been thrown under the bus, so trading for him is out. Maybe they could trade for the 54 sailors of the new submarine they have. Maybe those sailors know something they won't want to be told, and they could trade for them. I hope they keep working on it. She's young, she's just an athlete, she has a family. She made a mistake, but something equivalent to a misdemeanor.
It's hard to say whether you should make a big deal out of it and shout for her release, or keep still and work it out behind the scenes. Otherwise, we could even get it mentioned at the UN. Just don't know what to do. State Department says, let them handle it. I pray so.

(42,770 posts)care more. From what I read, big money to play there compared to other places. Dicey whenever you are there, but now the absolute worst time.
Ah, the inequities in our life! Just no big leverage. Plus most people, unfortunately, don't really give a $hit . Saw on CNN, that there's another guy that's been there forever.
