Gun violence becomes leading cause of death among US youth, data shows

Source: The Guardian

Gun violence overtook car accidents as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the US in 2020, according to a report from the University of Michigan.

The finding was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday as part of longer term research effort from the university’s Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention (IFIP).

An analysis of mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed a nearly 30% increase in gun-related deaths among Americans up to age 19 between 2019 and 2020, the researchers said. These deaths include incidents of suicide, accidental shootings and homicides, with homicides outpacing the other two categories.

The number of deaths from car accidents and gun homicides among infants, children and young adults has been growing closer since 2016. Drug overdoses and poisoning increased by more than 80% between 2019 and 2020, the researchers found, to become the third leading cause of death among this demographic.

and a driving test. All you need is a gun and some ammo to start killing, it's our 2nd amendment right.
Thanks NRA.

7. CDC data

For ages 0 - 19 there were 4129 firearm related deaths in 2020.
Of those 2811 were homicides, 1293 were suicides and 25 due to legal intervention.
This is across a population of 81,254,355 for that age range.

For the same age range there were 3209 firearm related deaths during 2019 .
Of those 2023 were homicides, 1167 were suicides and 19 due to legal intervention.
This is across a population of 81,679,568 for that age range.

While suicides were up 11%, homicides were up 39% in spite of a decrease in population for that age range.

Ruling is expected by the end of June. If they find for the gun owners it is highly likely that it will be used to dismantle gun control laws in every state.

To the gun industry, dead children are merely collateral damage/acceptable losses for gun industry profits and political donations.

The NRA used to be for sportsmen, hunters and gun safety.

Now it has become an industry owned shill for the sale of more guns and the enrichment of its leaders.

Ironic how he chose that verb back in 2014.
