Ukrainian Troops Appear To Have Fought All The Way To The Russian Border

Source: Forbes

Ukrainian forces around Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, appear to have pushed Russian troops east past Ternova, a settlement on the Russian border.

If confirmed, the Ukrainians’ liberation of Ternova could mark an inflection point in Russia’s 10-week-old wider war in Ukraine. In late March, Ukrainian forces drove Russian invaders from northern Ukraine. Now it appears they’re driving the invaders from northeastern Ukraine, too.

Heavy fighting continues around Izium, south of Kharkiv—and also around Kherson on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. The Russians late last month briefly advanced around Kherson before stalling out. And Russian battalions more recently have captured a few settlements around Izium.

But those Russian gains are in jeopardy owing to Ukrainian gains around Kharkiv, a city of 1.4 million just 25 miles from Russia. As the Russian front collapses around Kharkiv, it could free up powerful Ukrainian brigades to push south, toward Izium, potentially tipping the fighting there in Kyiv’s favor.

Most likely true. Per the following link, Bayrak (spelled Bairak on my map) is about 2-3 miles from Ternova. Rubizhne is slightly further. They are all a stones throw from the Russian border. This link is the Ukrainian governments official news outlet.

The units of Ukraine’s Defense Forces liberated the settlements of Cherkaski Tyshky, Ruski Tyshky, Rubizhne, and Bayrak.

I'd love to see them cut off Crimea & work north. I can dream.

It has long been a principle of Soviet and Russian military doctrine to "go nuclear" if their troops are pushed beyond the Russian border.

My bet is that as Ukraine takes back its territory, it will move artillery as close to the border as possible and strike Russian artillery, supply depots/lines, and troop concentrations within Russia.

I my opinion the war is lost for russia and further killing will produce nothing. russia will never achieve peace in Ukraine.
The world now hates russia and their economy will be trashed for generations.

Ukrainian has not had the success in the south that it has had in the east. If Ukraine retakes its territory in the south, it will probably push on into Crimea. I would expect that retaking Crimea by force would be a big lift but, then again, no one expected Ukraine to fight Russia as long as it has.

If there is a negotiated resolution, which seems unlikely so far, Ukraine will never agree to cede Crimea but it could agree to not seek to enforce Ukrainian claims to Crimea by force. At this point, if Putin was smart (a big if), he would be looking for a settlement that allowed Russian to maintain control of Crimea and the eastern sections of Ukraine that has been under the de facto control of Russia for years.

Putin started this war and he can end it. I am not confident that Putin wants to end the war - yet.

The articles were good reads. I just found it funny that they would have a story related to geography and not add a map!

Thanks for the good news!

I knew they'd do it but I thought it might take months.

Any direct incursion over the border is going to be a huge blow to Putin's propaganda machine. There's nothing like frightened people fleeing to relatives in other cities to get the news out about how bad the war is really going. I hate the thought of anyone having to flee a war, but that's the only way news is going to spread in a totalitarian country.
