Jif Peanut Butter Products Recalled Due to Salmonella Outbreak
Source: CBS News
BOSTON -- Health officials are investigating a multi-state salmonella outbreak that has been linked to certain Jif peanut butter products made at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky. In the meantime, the company has voluntarily recalled a number of varieties believed to be involved.
Jif brand peanut butter that has lot code numbers 1274425 through 2140425 and the first seven digits end with 425 should not be consumed. For a full list of the recalled items, visit the FDA's website.
The FDA also recommends washing and sanitizing surfaces that may have come into contact with the peanut butter.
A total of 14 illnesses have been reported, including one in Massachusetts.
Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Older people, young children, and those with weakened immune systems can be more susceptible to severe illness.

(7,911 posts)I've been using it for a couple weeks with no ill effects.
My lot# 2109 425, but I'm in the Pacific Northwest.
Now I don't know if I should go on using it or not.

(1,986 posts)I remember Peter Pan having a salmonella outbreak years back. Not only did I like Peter Pan peanut butter, it tended to be a little cheaper than Jif and Skippy. Maybe I should just swear off peanut butter completely.

(855 posts)It says you should DISCARD the product! Not return for a refund, but rather throw away your 10 bucks for the jar because the company could suffer financially !
We don't need no regulation.

It is a shame, but these are going to be discarded.

(32,777 posts)They never say if "house brands" are involved.
You know when you buy peanut butter with a "Shop N Save" or "Giant Eagle" logo on it, those products aren't made by the store, right? They're made by the major manufacturers, they label them differently but it's the same product. So I'm wondering if Jif makes house brands, and if so what are they? They never say.

About a month ago, I caught hubby stealing all my yummy Jif peanut butter!
He ended up buying his own: Unsweetened Skippy.
I will tell him, so he will be glad that I got on his butt about stealing my peanut butter. I can claim: "I saved you from salmonella!"

(129,543 posts)Took a bit of time but finally found the code along the edge of one of the long sides of the packaging and the last 4 digits of the 1st 7 numbers after the "Best By" date on mine does end in "425" (2026 425), so mine is a recalled product.
I hadn't opened it yet. I normally bought jars but the last couple times, I bought the squeeze packs because I have been using PB for some recipes (e.g., Thai panang curry dishes) and it's easier to measure with the squeeze.
Thanks for the heads-up!

So I called them. I'm waiting on forever hold right now on the phone. "Wait time exceeds 15 minutes". I guess they cared so much about their customers, they hired a major call-handling company to assist them. NOT!
Update: After waiting well over an hour on hold, I hung up. All I was doing was draining my cell phone battery.
