With the Friday's Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the U.S. joined only three other countries El Salvador, Nicaragua and Poland that have rolled back abortion rights since 1994, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights.
The big picture: Nearly 60 countries have liberalized their abortion laws though some only incrementally over the last 25 years.
The rollback of abortion rights has come in countries "where democracies have eroded," said Margaret Harpin, a legal adviser at the Center for Reproductive Rights, which advocates for abortion rights advocacy and tracks abortion laws worldwide.
At the same time, "we've seen a considerable amount of change in recent years, [and] an overall global trend towards liberalization" of abortion laws, Harpin told Axios before the Supreme Court decision.

(19,993 posts)here in Ireland. We have our problems still, especially the grip the paedo enablers have on our education and hospital systems, BUT by a massive two thirds majority in each referendum, we now have abortion and marriage equality. I can already see the Catholic anti abortion groups starting to chip away, but the reality is as more old die off, that margin is going to get bigger. However, the bigots are being funded by the rich Catholic RWNJs in the US and they need to be exposed.
My point is that liberal America fucked up for decades, and didn't defend what they had won. What was won in Ireland can be won in the US, but you need a broad coalition as they got together in Ireland. The LGBTQ community in Ireland were magnificent in organising and as marriage equality is next in the US, I have no doubt that the US LGBTQ community in the US will be equally as strident.

did they overturn Roe, they overturned States Right in NY over concealed gun law. A law dating back to 1913. So what's next?
The SC is ripping rights away from us in real time. Now is the time to act. Vote for 2 Democratic Senators Ohio and Pennsylvania to get rid of Sinema and Machin and keep the House and increase Dems in the Senate.

(10,264 posts)They are afraid of being prosecuted even if an abortion was needed to save a womans life. The same will happen here.
In 2021, an international think tank that rates democracies downgraded the US for the first time. With this decision to overturn established law, the US will be further downgraded. The Supreme Court is shredding democracy one right at a time. Either birth control or LGBTQ rights are next, followed by fully overturning the Voting Rights Act, perhaps followed by overturning Brown v. Board of Education. While that may seem like a long shot, Republican judges have been refusing to say whether they support Brown. Many Trump-appointed judges did so in their Senate hearings, and the white supremacists, along with the religious right, are ascendant in the Republican Party. The radicals on the SC are merely an extension of the Republican Party, so no established law that either of those two constituencies want overturned is safe.
The US has been added to an annual list of backsliding democracies for the first time, the International IDEA thinktank has said, pointing to a visible deterioration it said began in 2019.
