DeMaio Concedes, Filner Wins Mayoral Race

Source: NBC San Diego

Hours after San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio conceded in the election of San Diego's next mayor, Mayor-elect Bob Filner gave the first look at his administration during a post-election news conference held at a University Heights park.

Speaking in front of a playground at Trolley Barn Park, Filner stood with his fiancee Bronwyn Ingram and promised a "very open" administration that will come in with respect, understanding but will not be status-quo.

“I purposely had this news conference not in city hall to show we are going to respect and concentrate on neighborhoods,” he explained.

Filner thanked DeMaio for his respectful concession speech early Wednesday that marked the end of a grueling 17-month-long race and a record $13 million spent on attacks and campaigning.

Use to live in San Diego though.. all over the county. My former husband, the father of my children, still lives there. Since he's a bush>romney guy..don't think he voted for him.

Here's some snips from wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Filner

Robert Earl "Bob" Filner (born September 4, 1942) is the U.S. Representative for California's 51st congressional district, and previously the 50th, serving since 1993, and was chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs 2007-2011.

<snip>

Early life, education, and academic career

Filner was born in Pittsburgh, in Squirrel Hill into a Jewish family. Filner began his advocacy for civil rights at the age of 18 when he became one of the first people to set foot on a Greyhound bus that was headed into the Deep South on what would become known as the Freedom Rides.[2] At the time he was a student at Cornell University where he was studying engineering. In June 1961, after pulling into the bus station in Jackson, Mississippi, Filner was arrested along with his co-riders for "disturbing the peace and inciting a riot". Filner refused to post bond in for his release and remained incarcerated in prison for two months.[3][4] His case was eventually overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States along with all the cases for other activists; the Supreme Court also overturned the laws for racial separation. Filner believes that what he did during that Freedom Ride is what he needed to do to have a say in what was happening. In Filner's own words he says "I've never been a passive person." "I've always felt that, if you think something should be changed, it's your responsibility to actively pursue that change."[5]

As a student, he worked on the Cornell Daily Sun, the student newspaper. He graduated from Cornell in 1963 with a degree in chemistry, and earned his doctorate in history of science from the same school six years later. Shortly after earning his PhD, he moved to San Diego, becoming a history professor at San Diego State University for more than 20 years. He resigned his position in 1992 to run for Congress.[citation needed]

San Diego..being so "conservative", as in Chamber of Congressy, and so on..would elect him. It is close..I hope he prevails in the final count.

It sounds like he'd be good for San Diego.

Seems I remember they went for McCain in 2008. And, I know how "conservative" they are..with Pendleton there and mitt even has one of his homes in La Jolla.

Which is where I use to live in the '70s..just not in the fancy part.

What all does South San Diego consist of.. like Imperial Beach?

San Diego has changed a lot in the past few years. We now have a city council of 5 DEM and 4 GOP and a Dem Mayor.

This is perplexing though.. not quite a sure thing..hope he gets IT!

DeMaio dropped from a lead at about midnight, dropping 1 percent as more precincts reported. Then, at about 12:40 a.m., Filner jumped to lead the race with just over a 2,000 votes.

Filner has 51 percent and DeMaio had 49 percent of votes with 100 percent of precincts reporting. There are still more than 475,000 absentee and provisional ballots that need to be counted. The San Diego County Registrar said the final tally will be Thursday by 5 p.m.

With 10,000-vote lead, Filner said he can confidently look forward to his inauguration and term as mayor.

SOCAL is like the big valley and it can be a conservative environment. It is a wonder that a Democratic can breath in this area of the state. Every 20 years those nuts try to separate north from south so that they can have their own world. They fail to realize it is the whole state which makes the state so great and not one area working harder then the other. I would like to see a solution to all the SMOG...............
