Southern Baptist Convention under federal investigation for sexual abuse scandal

Source: Houston Chronicle

Federal investigators are probing the Southern Baptist Convention over its handling of sexual abuse following the publication of an explosive report that found top officials had for two decades silenced abuse survivors and fought reforms out of fears of lawsuits, leaders of the nation’s second-largest faith group said on Friday.

In a statement, the SBC’s top leadership body, the Executive Committee, confirmed that the Department of Justice is looking into “multiple” Southern Baptist entities.

The statement was signed by all of the leaders of the SBC’s seminaries and main entities.

Leaders said they will cooperate fully with the investigation and that they “continue to grieve and lament past mistakes.” They also noted that the faith group has taken numerous steps towards rectifying the abuse problem in recent years.

And certain Romans weren't ones to talk when it came to sexual perversions, if you know what I mean.

Bullshit. They are just sorry they got caught. How were any of these idiots thinking this sort of behavior is in line with the teachings of Jesus?

7. Ah, this comes up again! It seems like this ugly issue of abuse does come up periodically.

And I wouldn't be surprised at the cover-up. So desperate to maintain their church standing and membership numbers, that they would mute those who suffered the most by covering it all up. Disgusting.

12. Unfortunately, that seems to be an institutional response, rather than a religious response.

Per Nasser, per Penn State, Per Michigan football.

I've even seen it covered up in families. Seems sort of the knee-jerk reaction, sweep it all under the rug.

who has got to be in distress this week. I stopped calling her over offensive outbursts she made (usually after a couple glasses of wine). I thought of her as a single issue voter until election time 2020. She would repeat what tfg said about mail-in voting, also seemed to excuse the terrorists who caused millions in damage to the Capitol, shit on the floor and smeared it on the walls. She started hating gays, and started believing Democrats are all child molesters (her own daughter was molested by her former husband). I couldn't deal with it. Now her hero is going to prison and her adopted religion (she was raised Catholic) is in the midst of a scandal.

Anyone really believe those stern, tight-lipped, moralizing douchebags were as chaste as they insisted others should be?

And hire more assessors. The Catholic and the Baptist crime families would be a good place to start.

17. The Southern Baptists are just like the Catholic priests who freely preyed on children for decades.

Those at the top hid the sexual abuse and let pastors move around to avoid consequences, just as the Catholic hierarchy did with pedophile priests.

And yet these are the religious people claiming to have the moral high ground to force women to have unwanted babies and often as a result to force them into poverty and loss of education and economic opportunities. The Taliban just outright forbids education for girls and women. The religious right is sneakier about it, knowing that forced birth will cause many girls to drop out of high school or college and thus limit their ability to compete with males for good jobs.

This version of religion is sick.
