A former New York City police officer and Marine Corps veteran, who swung a flagpole at police before tackling one officer and yanking his gas mask off during the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday, the longest sentence handed down so far among the more than 860 people charged in the insurrection.
Thomas Webster, 56, of Goshen, N.Y., was the first riot defendant facing the felony charge of assaulting an officer to try his luck with a jury. Twelve others have pleaded guilty to a similar charge. Webster took the witness stand at his trial and testified that he was acting in self-defense, saying D.C. police officer Noah Rathbun had instigated the fight.
Video showed Webster yelling at police on the Lower West Plaza of the Capitol, as officers struggled to maintain a perimeter outside the building. Rathbun then pushed Webster in the face Rathbun testified his hand slipped off Websters shoulder before Webster swung and smashed a Marine Corps flagpole on a bike rack and then tackled Rathbun. Webster pulled the officers gas mask off, causing Rathbun to begin choking on tear gas, the officer testified.
The jury took three hours before finding Webster guilty in May of the assault and four other felony charges.

(10,112 posts)Not sure what the pension is for a retired NYC officer, but I am sure one is not scraping by.
On Edit: Once again, all for THAT guy, I'll never in my life understand it.
Peace

(980 posts)Probably around 100K, since they all try to get as much overtime as possible in their final years to make their final 3 years' salary huge. That's what I believe the NY State pension is based on. I am sure that NYC is very similar.

(21,478 posts)he freaking lied on the stand, he made up a story that was clearly rebutted by video evidence.
I am happy to see that the prosecutors were asking for 17 years, they definitely upped the ante for this guy.
The pyramid strategy was a mistake IMO because time is a factor in this enormous investigation. Former prosecutors have said the same thing. DOJ should have done an investigation like the J6 committee did, the wheel, with spokes and hub strategy. Follow the facts wherever they arise at whatever level.
I have serious doubts that Trump will ever be indicted for his role in the attempted coup. The classified documents situation is a no brainer to indict, whether to do so or not is the only question.

(94,893 posts)It would still be time consuming to prepare an iron-clad case against a former President. Without interim prosecutions, I can imagine what the blogosphere would be doing.

(200 posts)He was a marine, he was a police officer, he suffered medical consequences from 9/11...
That said, he was a total piece of shit during the trial, he never took responsibility for his actions, he claimed he pulled the gas mask off the officer to show "they were friends". He cried and sobbed in court today and apologized to the court. The officer he assaulted was there today, he did not apologize to him...
And as already pointed out here today, all because of TFG...jfc.

He should be thankful he wasn't put away for the rest of his life. A former marine assaulting the Capitol building, damn. Who did he think was going pin a medal on him? Putin? Robert E, Lee?

All of these 800-900 people got played & used badly by DT and the GOP that day, by their own choice. It will be a travesty if none of those responsible for this operation are not indicted. To think that the 6 January attack on the Capitol was the diversionary tactic for what was really going on behind the scenes.

This kind of disrespect for the law doesn't just pop out of nowhere. It generally isn't a one-off event. I would suspect that a close examination of his years in law enforcement will turn up other instances where, in his mind, the end justified the means.
Hopefully, if he did frame or help to frame someone, that person or persons will have the wherewithal to get the system to reexamine their case.
