Schumer announces same-sex marriage vote

Source: Politico

Chuck Schumer said the Senate would vote on legislation to protect same-sex marriage in the coming weeks, forcing Republicans to take a stance ahead of the midterm elections.

“A vote on marriage equality will happen on the Senate floor in the coming weeks,” the Senate majority leader told reporters Wednesday.

Schumer’s announcement comes as Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) are working to shore up the 10 GOP votes necessary to pass their bill to codify same-sex marriage. Baldwin and Collins met earlier Wednesday with a bipartisan group of senators who are also backing the bill.

In addition to Collins, Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) support the legislation. Meanwhile, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has spoken positively of the effort but hasn’t committed to voting for it.

As a gay man in hillbilly country, it amazes me that where I live, in the buckle of trumphumping Jeebus country, folks are actually very gay friendly. It's painful to realize how much they actually despise you and want to strip you of basic rights.

and asked what changed in their lives when marriage equality was legalized, and don't let them waffle, deflect, or ditto slogans.

Around here, nothing changed beyond a bunch of happy couples who were secure in the knowledge they could visit each other in an ICU or plan the funeral if the worst came to pass. You know, basic human rights for life partners.

This is NM. When it came about here, it was met with a yawn and "'bout damn time." Even the preachers were quiet.
