'Substantial victory' for Kyiv as Russian front crumbles near Kharkiv
Source: Reuters
KYIV, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Ukrainian forces were charging through an expanding area of previously Russian-held territory in the east on Friday after bursting through the frontline in a surprise breakthrough that could mark a major turning point in the war.
After keeping silent for a day, Moscow effectively acknowledged that a section of its frontline had crumbled southeast of Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv.
"The very fact of a breach of our defences is already a substantial victory for the Ukrainian armed forces," the head of the Moscow-installed administration for occupied areas in Kharkiv province, Vitaly Ganchev, said on Russian state TV.
Ganchev later said his administration was trying to evacuate civilians from cities including Izium, Russia's main stronghold and logistics base in the province near the front in the east.

.... them, and get those Swedish attack jets into the action too. Let the Russians know they have 3 choices:
Walk towards the Ukrainian troops with their hands up and surrender. (after they shoot their senior officers if possible)
Keep fighting and die.
Go back to Russia, tell the people the truth and kill Putin in a new Russian revolution. 25% of Russians do not have
indoor plumbing.

(9,984 posts)Eventually Moldova may need help kicking out the 2500 or so troops Putin stationed there to force a separatist movement. It would be great to see them sink a few more ships in the Black Sea as well. After all the death and destruction, I want Putin to come out of this as a disgraced and deposed leader.

(111,255 posts)One is in the northeast, around Kharkiv and the other in the south, aimed at shoving them back onto Crimea. From there, I'm sure they'll be given a choice: surrender or start swimming.
45,000 might be a conservative number, as appalling as it is, nearly equaling the number of US dead in the long, drawn out Vietnam War. Russia has not published any numbers since March and now they're throwing recruits with minimal training at the front and have done so for a couple of months, swelling the number of dead without gaining any advantage.
I still see this as Ukraine's war of independence. All Russia will gain is a hostile neighbor and national antipathy in that region tends not to die.

(4,352 posts)the Ukrainians observed the Russians pulling troops from the east to reinforce the southern (Kherson) front. Well, the Ukrainians of course took advantage of the situation and now the Russian eastern front appears to be collapsing.

(7,521 posts)The Institute for the Study of War mentioned that Ukraine has driven 40-50 km through Russia's defensive lines and is expected to capture Kupyansk within the next 72 hours. That would be a significant disruption to Russian supply lines to Izium, which run south from Belarus.
I suspect Russia left their defensive lines largely manned by poorly motivated conscripts from the Luhansk and Donetsk People's Repubics, and the result is about as we would expect.
