Senate to punt on same-sex marriage vote until after midterms as GOP asks for more time
Source: CNN Politics
CNN The Senate will punt on a vote over same-sex marriage legislation until after the November midterm elections as negotiators ask for more time to lock down support a move that could make it more likely the bill will ultimately pass the chamber. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a leading Democratic negotiator on the bill that would codify same-sex marriage nationwide, said Thursday that more time is needed to negotiate the issue with Republicans and wants to delay any vote in the Senate until after the November midterm elections.
Were very confident that the bill will pass, but we will need a little more time, Baldwin told CNN. Democrats had originally been eyeing a Senate vote before this falls midterms potentially even as soon as next week. Now, Baldwin says she wants the bill to come up the day after the election.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to hold a vote on the bill, but timing has been uncertain as it has been unclear if there will be the needed 10 GOP votes to overcome a filibuster and advance the legislation toward final passage.
Because Leader Schumers main objective is to pass this important legislation, he will adhere to the bipartisan group of Senators request to delay floor action, and he is 100 percent committed to holding a vote on the legislation this year, Justin Goodman, a Schumer spokesperson, said. Leader Schumer will not give up and will hold the bipartisan group to their promise that the votes to pass this marriage equality legislation will be there after the election.

Tammy Baldwin who was a lead sponsor, has run into the Senate GOP cowards -

CNN Sen. Tammy Baldwin, the lead Democratic sponsor of a bill that would codify same-sex marriage that faces a key procedural vote as soon as next week, said Wednesday shes concerned midterm politics are complicating her ability to reach a deal on the legislation. I think that we were ready to push for a vote for this right after the House voted overwhelmingly, in a bipartisan manner, to advance this, Baldwin said, referencing how the House passed the bill in July 267 to 157.
In the Senate, however, the bills supporters need at least 10 Republicans on board in order to overcome a GOP filibuster. But now were getting ever closer to a certain date in November and I think thats a new factor, she added.
Baldwin explained that while she believes there could be 10 Republicans who support the final bill, she is less certain she could get 10 to break the filibuster, as procedural votes like that often fall on party lines, especially without a final deal on language.
I think the problem we have right now is that I think there are 10 on final passage, but we need cooperation on procedural votes before we get there, said Baldwin, who is the first known gay politician elected to the US Senate.

They are cornered. Full-throttle! Give them no refuge. Exact the heaviest toll possible. PUNISH them.
Me wishes Schumer had held their feet to the fire. Alas, as EF Baum recognized, a cowardly lion is afraid of its own tail.

Why can't r's understand that all of the people in this country need assurance that their lives aren't going to be turned upside down because some uptight jerk wants to interfere in their lives?
You know why they are my friends? Because they are nice. They treat me nice and they treat other people nice. That's all I need in a friend.
