DOJ asks Supreme Court to deny Trump's request to block House Democrats from getting his tax records
Source: NBC News
WASHINGTON The Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to reject former President Donald Trump's request to block the House Ways and Means Committee from accessing his tax records.
In the 30-page filing, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar argued that Trump and his legal team have not satisfied the standard for the "extraordinary relief" that they have requested.
Prelogar wrote that the executive branch determined that U.S. law required the treasury secretary to comply with a request from Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., for tax returns and related information associated with Trump and several businesses in which he has an interest.
Neal's request "furthers a valid legislative purpose and comports with the separation of powers," she said, adding that a district court agreed and a court of appeals unanimously affirmed the decision.

(14,795 posts)keep it tied up in scotus until/if the thugs get the house, then allow it. The house will then repeal the request and it will be over.

(10,434 posts)nor did I forget that Garland let statutes of limitations pass, NY let him off the hook, or that MF45 was basically caught red-handed with stolen, highly-classified documents. Or that MF45 pretty much admitted everything.
Also, Biden doesn't order Garland around the way MF45 did with Barr. I might wish otherwise, but it is best that he not have the image of ordering the prosecution of his political opponents.
It's up to Garland, and honest-to-God I don't see why SOMEONE hasn't been jailed for some of these multitudes of crimes, committed in plain sight, with video and audio available. If nothing else, possession of stolen property whether classified or not should be a trip straight to jail.

(10,434 posts)Should we keep the Senate, the work could be transferred and continued. That's independent of whatever the DoJ does.
And the point is, there are clocks ticking.

The System is perfect and good and incorruptible, even as it lets the obviously guilty Trump walk free, whipping his kkkultists into an insurrectionist frenzy with impunity.
How dare the DoJ doubt The System!

(16,254 posts)I'm surprised he can even keep track, although he certainly has all kinds of practice.
Those taxes must be filled with all kinds of goodies. He must take them to bed with him.

(32,046 posts)At least the actual ones, I'm am sure he or an agent has copies. The returns are and have been in the hands of the IRS. If there are "all kinds of goodies" why hasn't the IRS found them?

OK, Alito, work your magic.

(13,571 posts)Commissioner Rettig (as a tax atty) advised Trump to never release his tax returns. He was rewarded with the IRS Commissioner job, after which he refused a lawful request (shall) from Congress for those returns.

Most or all are corrupt. Even if not, did we somehow forget the four years of one incompetent after another that we ridiculed at the time? None should have been kept on.

(28 posts)Shouldn't EVERY tax return be a publicly accessible record?
Glass pockets! Let us all have glass pockets!

(10,434 posts)The issue here is that they were subpoenaed for a lawful investigation. The public would not receive them.
This is just a criminal trying to hide his crimes.
