Republicans move to retain Jan. 6 committee documents

Source: LA Times

Republicans are attempting to pass a new House rule to block materials compiled by the panel that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection from immediately going to the National Archives.

Although the House committee investigating the insurrection has released a trove of transcripts and underlying information backing up its report, the vast majority of raw information the panel collected is slated to be sent to the National Archives, where it could be locked away for up to 50 years.

But the proposed rules package the new Congress will vote on Tuesday orders that any record created by the panel must instead be sent to the House Committee on House Administration by Jan. 17 and orders the National Archives to return any material it has already received.

The move could signal that House Republicans intend to attempt to rebut the panel's investigation, which captivated public sentiment for months. The investigation ended with a criminal referral for former President Trump and a landmark report concluding Trump intentionally misled and provoked the insurrectionists as part of an attempt to stay in power after losing the 2020 election.

the GOP, that is all they are good at. They will find ways to twist and turn the information to high degrees of lies that change the history of the criminal actions by MAGAts on Jan 6. republicans are all descendants of Joseph Goebbels.

If they really cared about what happened on January 6th they would have taken part in the Select Committee. Now they're reduced to trying to attack the results with conspiracy theories and personal attacks on the members of the committee, the witnesses, and the evidence, like videotape of TFG telling his deplorables he'll walk with them to the Capitol to "fight like hell."

Hell, he couldn't even walk the 700 yards for a photo-op at the G7 meeting; they had to carry his fat ass in a golf cart.

And it failed.

Now it's their job to cover it up by destroying, stealing or hiding documents and then having their propaganda machine create a new reality.

Nothing has changed with the GOP. Nothing.

bullshit hype.

Their rebuts will be more nothingburgers, anyway. Everyone knows theirs is just vengeance theater, since they know that McCarthy's to blame to begin with for failing to get rethugs to on the Jan 6 committee who would obstruct its work. To begin with. And they know it. And everybody else knows it. Media and millions of the public who watched the hearings know it.

Transcripts, evidence collected through subpoena, and voluntary interviews.

Much too much to put in the report.

And it likely wasn't all entered into the congressional record, because it would be immediately public.

It sounds like there is a set of records they sent to the national archives that are not meant to be made public in our lifetime (or at least in the working lifetimes of politicians involved)..

My guess is those are already there. Congress can ask, but the archives is under no obligation to return them. That would take a court order.

Besides, the "new" congress can't do anything until tomorrow at the earliest, and they seem to have their hooves full.

They’ve released a number of pages to the public already, but Republicans will try their best to create documents redacted in such a way as to communicate an entirely different reality. Shades of Devin Nunes and his midnight trip to the WH to plant a fake report.
