CNN Fred White, a drummer for classic 70s superband Earth, Wind & Fire, has died, according to an Instagram post from his older brother and former bandmate, Verdine White. He was 67.
Verdine White wrote on Instagram on Sunday, Our family is saddened today with the loss of an amazing and talented family member, our beloved brother Frederick Eugene Freddie White. Verdine White called his brother a child protégé and identified him as an original founding member of Earth, Wind & Fire with gold records at the young age of 16 years old.
But more than that, Verdine White continued, at home and beyond he was the wonderful bro that was always entertaining and delightfully mischievous! Details about the cause of death were not immediately available. CNN has reached out to the bands representatives.
The bands official Instagram account also posted a memorial tribute to Fred White, sharing a clip of a drum solo during Earth, Wind & Fires Tour of the World at Rockpalast in Essen, Germany in 1979.

Saw EWF for their 2054 Tour (with Nile Rodgers and Chic) here in Philly back in 2017 and literally half the stage was percussion. He was Maurice's (deceased) and Verdine's (kickass bassist and I don't know how he moves the way he does) brother.
There was a clip per the OP article that the band posted on Instagram of one of his drum solos at their 1979 appearance in Germany. Found a youtube of the whole solo (I believe) here -
Damn... Glad I got to see him though. R.I.P. and thank you, your family, and your band for decades worth of iconic, uplifting, and just downright funky music.

(9,073 posts)I grew up making up dances with my friends to their music. I still do one of them (and the hustle) when I listen to them.

To this day, when someone asks what was the best concert I've ever been to, it was EW&F, hands down.
