Hundreds of migrants in Florida in what sheriff calls crisis
Source: Associated Press
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) At least 500 migrants have landed in the Florida Keys over the last several days in what the local sheriffs office describes as a crisis. Over the weekend, 300 migrants made landings at the sparsely populated Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Key West. The park was closed so that law enforcement and medical personnel could evaluate the migrants before moving them to Key West. Separately, 160 migrants have arrived by boats in other parts of the Florida Keys over the New Years Day weekend. On Monday, two new groups of migrants with 31 people were found in the Middle Keys.

(10,849 posts)And the US embargo isn't the biggest problem the Cuban economy has, it is the usual problems with communist/command economies, low output of inferior goods. Hard to base a economy solely on good cigars.
As the Soviets used to say "They pretend to pay us, we pretend to work"

(2,209 posts)... the US's largest historical trade partner sanctioned it. Or if an oil cartel cut it off from energy.
I'm pretty sure the US wouldn't fare well either. Imagine the collapse. Imagine the homelessness and dispossession that would occur.
Cigar economy? Clownish response.

(10,849 posts)Cuba's 5 most valuable exports are tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars and cigarellos, nickel, sugar, alcoholic beverages, then zinc ores and concentrates.
Yes, without the US that only leaves 194 countries to trade with.
Marcus IM
(2,209 posts)Countries don't produce things. Corporations do. The US sanctions restrict trade/sales/purchases with said entities.
I've read many posts where this has been made clear to you, but you persist with your misdirection regarding this.
Why isn't Aspirin available in Cuba for example? Because Bayer AG would face US sanctions. You know this, but continue with your false narrative.
I'm done with attempts at discussion with strawman and false narrative.
Bye bye.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (WKRC) -
A UPS driver who was born in Cuba went viral after his wife recorded him getting his first paycheck.
Yoel Diaz says, before he came to the US, he was struggling so much he could barely fill his refrigerator.
"Water, water, water, five, ten eggs, water," Diaz said, was usually all he had in it.
Back then, he was working as a computer science teacher for $12 a month.
"This is my first hourly paycheck that I feel every hour counted, that every hour of work has importance in my life and that I know I can work hard for something," Diaz said in the video. "I can't compare that emotion with anything, because I never had that in my country."

(2,816 posts)They have an excellent health care system, and they produced a very good vaccine vs COVID. They have a strong pharmaceutical and biotech in both business and academia. The embargo definitely hurts them. Russia still has horrible problems post communism it isn't some success story under the 'free market'. Also Cuba has one of the highest literacy levels in the entire world and they provide medical care to dozens of other poor nations.
Marcus IM
(2,209 posts)If a company/corporation does business in/with Cuba they cannot do business in/with US entities w/o a special permitting process. There are a few healthcare related exceptions. That is exactly why Bayer AG cannot sell Aspirin to the Cuban medical system - if they did, they would be prohibited from selling Aspirin in the USA.
Obviously, Bayer AG chooses the more lucrative privatized market of some 300,000,000 people over a public health system serving "only" 12 million in Cuba.
The poster deliberately brings a strawman argument by claiming that trade is between countries and not businesses. They have been using this strawman for years, despite many proofs - primarily in the Latin America forum.
I'm not going to address strawman arguments brought forth by intransigent deniers of fact.

(10,849 posts)Feel free to point to a communist style economy that worked well.
The US embargo does not help but they would be in trouble without it also.
The simple fact is NO communist economy has EVER been a success story.

(2,209 posts)Perhaps you are missing my point, and would rather deal with strawman arguments and anecdotes.
Why do so many Mexicans, Hondurans, etc etc come to the US? For jobs that pay so they can send some home. Just like Cubans.

(10,849 posts)There hasn't been a successful socialist or communist command economy.
There's a reason for that because it does not work.
Marcus IM
(2,209 posts)I hope you understand that I lived there. So, your fake numbers, strawman arguments and anecdotes don't hold much sway. As a matter of fact, your comments seem rather immature and ignorant to me. They might work on some who don't know much about Cuba, it's economic systems and gov't, but not those who know.

It's a police state.
Marcus IM
(2,209 posts)I know the rubber rafter situation has been clearly explained to you, but, in true form, you stick to repeating the same swill.
The USA offers over 20,000 legal immigration visas to Cubans, with the US interests section doing the background search. Not all are even applied for. Those who cannot conform to the legal process - because of criminal or civil courts background issues - resort to rafts.
I know this had been explained to you quite often, with resources to indicate it, but, yet, you spew onward with your uninformed posts.
It might work on those completely uninformed of the US standoff with Cuba, but not on those of us who are well informed and have actually experienced living in Cuba, and migrating to the US.
There are 12,000,000 Cubans who wish to stay in their country.

(10,849 posts)To point out Cuba is ranked very poorly in freedom and freedom of the press, it's a police state with many political prisoners.
But you know they have good healthcare so I guess as long as the trains run on time.
